Free Trading Journal Spreadsheet
Log completed trades in USD, compare daily, monthly and strategy totals, then export a value snapshot. Calculations run on this page; exported Excel cells do not contain formulas.
Use USD per unit for all prices and USD for costs. Market names are labels: this tool does not apply forex lots, futures or option multipliers, or currency conversion. Do not enter pip values as prices.
Only a symbol, valid close date and valid price/quantity/cost inputs enter summaries. Zero-net trades count in every win-rate denominator. 0 entered rows excluded; these rows stay in exports with a status column.
No autosave or broker import. Download before leaving or refreshing. The sample button replaces current rows; Clear All removes them.

Export Your Spreadsheet
Excel contains four value-only sheets. CSV contains trade rows, including incomplete rows marked as excluded from summaries. Text that begins like a spreadsheet formula gets a leading apostrophe in CSV; check it after importing. The empty template contains headers only and does not calculate offline.
One record set, three ways to review it
The daily, monthly and strategy views use the same completed trades. A completed record needs a symbol, a valid close date, a positive quantity, valid Long/Short direction, a positive entry price, a nonnegative exit price and valid costs. Blank costs mean zero. Incomplete records remain visible and are exported with an exclusion status.
Dates mean the calendar day a trade closed, in the timezone you choose to use consistently. Daily rows combine all trades on that date; monthly rows combine those daily results. A month shows its own P&L, not a running cumulative return.
Check the calculation against a known trade
For a Long trade from USD 100 to USD 103 with 10 units and USD 2 in costs, gross P&L is USD 30 and net P&L is USD 28. Net return on entry value is 2.8%. With a stop at USD 98, initial price risk is USD 20 and net R is 1.40. A Short from 100 to 97 with a stop at 102 produces the same result.
Market labels do not change that model. This calculator does not handle lots, contract multipliers, FX, financing, dividends, nonlinear payoffs or partial exits. Normalize to units and USD outside this tool, or use the Excel formula template with explicit unit and FX inputs where appropriate.
Interpret the statistics within their sample
Win rate divides profitable completed trades by all completed trades, including zero results. Profit factor divides the sum of positive net results by the magnitude of negative net results; it is N/A without losses. Average R uses only trades with a valid stop on the loss side of entry, and displays that count.
Daily closed P&L drawdown starts at zero and measures declines from the previous peak of cumulative daily net results. It excludes account balances, cash flows, open positions and intraday losses. Strategy totals describe these logged trades; they do not establish a repeatable trading edge or predict future returns.
Export a snapshot, then keep a backup
The XLSX workbook and CSV contain values, not formulas. Editing them will not recalculate summaries. No file can be imported back into this page, and refreshing discards its in-memory entries. The empty template is for manual record keeping; use the formula template for spreadsheet calculations.
CSV quotes delimiters, quotes and line breaks, and prefixes formula-like text. Spreadsheet programs differ in how they import or reopen CSV, so inspect the imported data and prefer XLSX when preserving typed text matters.
Frequently asked questions
Is the journal free, and is it saved?
The page and exports are free without an account. Entries stay in memory while the page is open; there is no autosave, broker connection or file import. Download before leaving or refreshing.
What does the Excel file contain?
Four sheets: Trades, Daily Summary, Monthly Summary and Statistics. They contain values rather than formulas. Incomplete rows remain in Trades with an exclusion status. The empty template has headers and a blank row, without calculations.
How are P&L and R calculated?
Gross P&L is the signed price change times positive unit quantity. Net P&L subtracts USD costs; blank costs mean zero. Net return divides net P&L by entry value. Net R divides net P&L by initial price risk times quantity, with a stop on the loss side of entry.
Can I mix assets or currencies?
Market names are labels. Calculations use USD prices per unit and USD costs; they do not apply lots, contract multipliers or currency conversion. Do not enter pip values as prices. Convert and verify your inputs before using the summaries.
Which rows count in summaries?
All summaries require a symbol, valid close date and valid numeric trade inputs. Zero-net trades count in the win-rate denominator. Missing winning or losing groups display N/A. Daily and monthly results use the same completed record set as overall and strategy statistics.
Is drawdown an account risk measure?
The reported drawdown is a decline from the prior peak of cumulative daily closed P&L, starting at zero. It is not account-equity or intraday drawdown and excludes open trades and cash flows. It cannot establish a worst-case future loss.
