NinjaTrader market data: feed, history, and depth

NinjaTrader can use data from connected providers for real-time charts, historical requests, Level II windows, and replay. The provider, instrument type, entitlement, and selected connection determine what data is available.

At a glance

  • Preferred historical and real-time connections can be configured separately by instrument type.
  • Historical Data tools download data from a connected provider when that provider has it available.
  • Level II displays bid and ask information and market depth for the selected instrument.
  • Market Replay and historical tick playback have different depth and accuracy characteristics.

Direct answer

NinjaTrader lets users choose preferred connections for historical and real-time data by instrument type. Historical data is supplied by a connected provider and can be cached or downloaded, while Level II shows bid and ask depth. Market Replay can preserve synchronized Level 1 and Level II events when replay data exists. Pineify does not sell, stream, or access NinjaTrader market data.

Preferred connections
Historical and real-time sources can be set by instrument type

Connection order and provider support affect the data path.

Historical data
Downloaded from a connected provider and loaded through local cache

Date range, interval, and data type depend on provider coverage.

Level II
Bid and ask information with market-depth rows

Depth availability depends on the provider and instrument.

Market Replay
Level 1 and Level II events can be synchronized when replay data exists

Historical tick playback can lack Level II and may simulate bid and ask values.

Separate real-time, historical, and replay data

Real-time data updates charts and windows as a provider sends events. Historical data fills requested periods from the provider or local cache. Market Replay is a separate playback connection that uses recorded or downloadable data.

The same symbol can therefore have different availability across live, historical, and replay workflows. Check the data type and requested date range instead of treating one successful chart load as proof that all data modes are enabled.

  • Name the instrument and requested data type before troubleshooting.
  • Check whether the provider supplies last, bid, ask, tick, or depth data.
  • Keep replay tests separate from live workspaces and accounts.

Provider choice controls the data path

NinjaTrader supports multiple simultaneous connections. Its guide explains that connection order and preferred real-time or historical connections affect which provider is used for each instrument class.

A provider can support one instrument class while another provider supplies a different class. Verify symbol mapping, account entitlement, and the preferred connection in Tools > Options > Market Data when results do not match expectations.

  • Check the provider before changing chart settings.
  • Set preferred historical and real-time sources intentionally.
  • Treat subscription and entitlement status as provider-specific facts.

Historical data is downloaded and cached

The Historical Data window can download data from a connected provider when data is available. NinjaTrader also maintains memory and disk cache layers, so a chart can load quickly from data already stored locally.

When requesting a long period, confirm the provider range, contract rollover or merge policy, interval, and data type. A missing date range can be a provider limitation rather than a chart error.

Level II and Market Replay are not the same

The Level II window displays color-coded bid and ask data and uses price rows to show market depth. The depth shown depends on the provider and the instrument data available to the connection.

NinjaTrader documents Market Replay as holding Level 1 and Level II events together when replay data is available. Historical tick playback may lack Level II and can simulate bid and ask values when the provider does not supply stamped bid and ask ticks.

  • Use Level II for the live depth workflow when the provider supplies it.
  • Use Market Replay when synchronized historical depth is required and available.
  • Label historical tick playback separately from Level II replay in research notes.

Pineify is not a market-data vendor

Pineify can generate supported NinjaTrader 8 Indicator or Strategy source code, but it does not provide a feed, subscription, Continuum connection, Level II stream, historical database, replay files, account access, or order execution.

Any generated script must be reviewed and tested in a user-controlled NinjaTrader environment with the intended provider and data type. A successful static check does not validate data quality or live connectivity.
