NinjaTrader Margin Requirements Explained

Margin is the amount of account equity required to open or maintain a futures position. The amount depends on the contract, the session, and the clearing rules in effect when you trade.

At a glance

  • Intraday margin is a broker policy for eligible positions closed before the session close.
  • Initial or overnight margin is the exchange-based requirement for carrying a position into the next session.
  • Maintenance margin is the equity threshold that must be maintained after a futures position is open.
  • NinjaTrader can liquidate positions when an account fails to meet its margin requirement, and temporary changes can occur without advance notice.

Direct answer

NinjaTrader separates reduced intraday margin from exchange-set initial margin used for positions held through the session close. Maintenance margin describes the minimum equity required after a position is open. Rates can change with market conditions, so use NinjaTrader’s current margin table and contract details before placing an order. Pineify does not quote, set, or monitor brokerage margin.

Reference points

Check the platform detail that applies to you

Intraday margin
A reduced requirement that applies during the broker-defined intraday window.

Confirm the contract schedule and current rate in NinjaTrader’s margin policy.

Initial or overnight margin
The exchange-based amount required to hold a position between sessions.

A position that remains open near the session close must meet the applicable initial margin.

Maintenance margin
The minimum equity requirement for keeping an open futures position.

A shortfall can lead to a margin call, liquidation, or other account action.

Excess margin
Account equity above the minimum margin requirement.

Treat excess margin as a risk buffer, not as additional guaranteed buying power.

Intraday and overnight margin are different

Intraday margin is a lower amount that a broker may offer while a contract is traded during the permitted session. The position must be closed before the relevant session cutoff to remain within that intraday policy.

Initial margin is the exchange requirement for holding the position through the session close. It is normally higher than the intraday amount because the position remains exposed outside the day trading window.

  • Check the contract’s session close and the intraday margin end time.
  • Close or reduce a position before the cutoff if you are relying on intraday margin.
  • Confirm that the account has enough equity for initial margin before holding overnight.

What initial and maintenance margin mean

Initial margin is a performance bond rather than a purchase price for the futures contract. It supports the account’s obligations when a position is opened and is set by the exchange and clearing arrangement.

Maintenance margin is the minimum equity level required after the position is open. A falling account balance can create a margin shortfall even when the original entry met the initial requirement.

Why the published amount can change

NinjaTrader states that its risk team can adjust intraday margin for market volatility and may apply temporary higher requirements around economic news. The margin table is therefore a dated reference, not a permanent quote.

Contract specifications, exchange changes, account type, and the selected connection can also affect the amount shown in the platform. Recheck the official page and the account’s excess margin columns before trading.

A safer margin review workflow

Start with the exact contract month or continuous symbol and read the current NinjaTrader contract details. Record the intraday, initial, and maintenance values that apply to the account and the session you intend to trade.

Then size the position using a loss amount you can afford, leaving room for adverse movement, commissions, and data or exchange charges. A margin minimum is not a sensible risk budget by itself.

  • Verify the account type and connection before using the table.
  • Check the margin and excess margin columns in NinjaTrader Desktop.
  • Review liquidation and delivery dates for physically deliverable contracts.
  • Recheck rates after major volatility or exchange announcements.

Where Pineify fits

Pineify can help draft a NinjaTrader 8 Indicator or Strategy source file and run an external, read-only static check within its supported NinjaScript scope. That workflow does not retrieve brokerage balances, calculate a live margin call, or place an order.

Use NinjaTrader and your broker or clearing firm for current margin, account, and liquidation information. Review and test any generated code in NinjaTrader Editor, Strategy Analyzer, and simulation before considering live use.
