ChartMill vs. Finviz: Which Technical Screener Fits Your Process?

ChartMill ratings and Finviz filters can narrow a research list, but they do not measure the same thing. Compare score definitions, data timestamps and paid access before carrying candidates into a separate technical watchlist.

Practical Workflow

Keep a Reproducible Screening Record

Adding more indicators does not establish that false breakouts will decrease. Test a defined rule before making that claim.

1

Step 1: Save the Definition and Observation Time

Choose a security universe and record the filters used. Include the score date and the price session, not just the ticker list. Check a chart for a candidate that passes and one that fails so the threshold has a clear meaning.

2

Step 2: Inspect Supported Technical Fields

Add supported symbols to a collection and choose an interval. Compare price, trend or volume readings on the same session and chart. The table cannot regenerate ChartMill ratings, and an intraday observation does not prove a daily breakout has closed above the chosen level.

Compare Like-for-Like Observations

Imagine a candidate with a prior-close Setup score of 8 in a saved screen and a current-day score of 5 in its technical report. The numbers can differ because the observations use different data cutoffs. The first question is when each was calculated, not which website is correct. Finviz's analyst recommendation or price-change field cannot settle that question because it measures something else.

For a separate illustrative breakout rule, let the previous 20 completed daily bars have a highest high of $50. Today trades to $50.40 but closes at $49.80. A rule requiring a daily close above $50 has not passed: the close is 0.4% below the threshold. A positive five-minute signal or a high setup score does not change that daily-close rule.

If you later test the rule, keep the universe, bar-completion convention, costs and missing-data treatment fixed. A chart example is useful for checking what a rule means; it is not evidence of an improved win rate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the practical difference between ChartMill and Finviz?

ChartMill provides distinct Technical Rating and Setup Quality scores alongside fundamental and technical research. Finviz combines stock and ETF filters with maps and charts. The useful comparison is which field definition and workflow answer your research question, not which product has the highest-sounding score.

Does a high Technical Rating guarantee a high Setup Quality score?

No. ChartMill separates trend health from the quality of the current setup. A strong trend can be extended, while a narrow consolidation can occur in a weaker trend. Both scores run from 0 to 10, but neither is a win probability.

Why can ChartMill screening and its technical report disagree?

The market-data documentation says the screener Setup value is calculated after the market close, while the report can incorporate current-day data. Check the calculation time before interpreting different readings as an error or a new trading signal.

Does paying for ChartMill make its prices real time?

No. Its subscription page explicitly retains delayed data. The detailed market-data page distinguishes US and Cboe Europe intraday coverage from end-of-day coverage on other supported exchanges. Paid access and quote timing are separate questions.

Can Pineify reproduce either proprietary screener?

Market Screener can display supported technical fields in a separate collection. It does not import proprietary ChartMill scores or Finviz rules, export the matrix as Pine code or execute trades. Full access requires a Pineify account and Expert or higher.

Review Supported Technical Readings

Use a separate collection with Expert or higher and verify current plan access. A screen narrows research; it does not submit a trade.
