How to Use This Trade Journal Template Generator
A trading journal template helps you record every trade in a consistent way. This generator lets you build a custom template in two formats.
- Choose format: Pick Spreadsheet (CSV) for Excel or Google Sheets, or Printable (Text) for a section-based template you can paste into a doc or note app.
- Select fields: Check the fields you want (e.g. Trade Date, Symbol, Entry/Exit, P&L, R-Multiple, Notes). Use All, None, or Default to quickly adjust.
- Copy or download: Copy the result to clipboard or download the CSV file. Open the CSV in Excel or Google Sheets and start logging trades.
What Is a Trade Journal Template?
A trade journal template (or trading journal template) is a predefined structure for logging your trades. Instead of free-form notes, you fill in the same fields for every trade so you can later analyze patterns, win rates, and mistakes.
- Consistency: Same fields every time so you can compare trades and run statistics.
- Discipline: Encourages pre-trade planning and post-trade review.
- Performance: Track P&L, R-multiple, and setup type for later review in your spreadsheet.
Why Use a Trading Journal?
A journal gives you records to review after trades are closed. This generator supplies the structure; it does not calculate profitability, diagnose behavior, or establish that a setup will work in future markets.
- Improve execution: Review entries and exits to tighten your process.
- Risk awareness: Log position size, stop loss, and R-multiple to stay within your rules.
- Strategy refinement: Filter by symbol, timeframe, or setup type in your spreadsheet; this generator does not run a statistical test or historical backtest.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the CSV contain?
The export contains the selected column headers and one blank row. There are 16 available fields and 8 default fields. It does not contain sample trades, formulas, charts, or automatic P&L calculations.
Can I use the file in Excel or Google Sheets?
Yes. Import the CSV into your spreadsheet application, then enter trades and add any formulas you need. This page creates a local CSV download; it does not create or connect to a cloud spreadsheet.
How do I use the text format?
The text output contains a Markdown-style heading and blank space for each selected field. Copy it into a document or notes app for editing or printing. The generator does not export a PDF.
Does the generator save my journal?
No. This page creates an empty template, not a stored trade journal. Field choices reset when the page is reloaded. Save the downloaded file or copied text yourself; no account sync or trade import runs here.
Will the template calculate performance?
No. P&L, percentage return, and R-Multiple are labels for values you record or calculate in your spreadsheet. Define currency, position units, fees, and the initial-risk denominator consistently before comparing trades.
