Detailed Evaluation
Finviz vs. Thinkorswim vs. Pineify
Compare access, scan semantics and costs. No CPU, memory or latency benchmark was run for this comparison.
| Dimension | Finviz / Elite | Thinkorswim | Pineify Market Screener |
|---|---|---|---|
| Platform and task | Browser-based research, stock and ETF filters, maps and charts. | Desktop, web and mobile platforms; Stock Hacker is a desktop scanning workflow. | Web workspace for technical indicator collections. |
| Access | Public research plus optional registration and Elite subscription. | Schwab account for continuing platform access; a 30-day Guest Pass supports simulation. | Sign-in required; full screener access needs Expert or higher. |
| Scan logic | Combine the available field filters and inspect their definitions. | Study filters support Condition Wizard or thinkScript, with scan-specific restrictions. | Configure available columns and intervals; no arbitrary thinkScript or Pine execution. |
| Visual overview | Maps show selected groups and securities. | MarketWatch Visualize includes Heat Map and Index Watch. | Indicator values and statuses across a collection. |
| Aggregation | Chart intervals and screen field definitions must be checked separately. | Select aggregation per Study filter; no secondary aggregation within that filter script. | Eight intervals from 1 minute to 1 day; 15 collections, 100 symbols each and up to 20 indicator columns. |
| Data timing | Regular stock quotes are currently 1-minute delayed; Elite stock quotes are real time. | Check live versus paperMoney mode, exchange agreements and displayed quote status. | Visible active collection polls every 60 seconds; provider timing is separate. |
| Orders and code | Research and table exports do not create an executable strategy. | Trading requires an order workflow and account permissions; scan matches do not submit orders. | No broker execution, automatic rule import or matrix-to-Pine export. |
| Cost | Free tier; Elite $39.50/month or $299.50/year. | No platform charge for Schwab clients; standard trade pricing and applicable data fees remain. | See current Pineify pricing for Expert or higher access. |
Practical Routine
Keep Research Conditions Separate from Orders
Save the rule and session with the candidates. A matching symbol is an observation, not a completed transaction.
Step 1: Record a Reproducible Scan
Choose a universe and write down the thresholds. For Stock Hacker Study filters, save the aggregation and EXT setting. Compare a matching symbol with its chart using the same session and interval before assuming the condition is right.
Step 2: Review Supported Fields Separately
Add supported symbols to a Pineify collection and configure available fields. This does not transfer thinkScript rules or establish that differently sourced values match. Check the listing, interval and data time; review any intended order in the brokerage platform.
Two Session Settings Can Produce Two Valid Answers
Consider a hypothetical five-minute volume threshold of 100,000 shares. A premarket bar contains 120,000 shares. A scan that includes that session can evaluate the bar; a scan restricted to regular hours does not use the same bar sequence. The difference does not prove that one scanner is broken or faster. Save the session, interval and timestamp with the result.
For a rule combining daily trend and five-minute momentum, configure separate Stock Hacker Study filters with their intended aggregations and place them in the appropriate condition group. Do not assume that a multi-period chart script can be pasted unchanged into one filter. Verify how each condition behaves with unfinished bars before interpreting a match.
A scan can change before an order is reviewed. The last traded price is not a guaranteed fill, and paperMoney results do not establish live execution quality. Record the bid, ask, order type and transaction costs separately if you evaluate a trading process.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Finviz and thinkorswim?
Finviz is a research website with filters, maps and charts. The thinkorswim platform suite supports Schwab trading; its desktop Stock Hacker supports configurable scans. A research shortlist and an order ticket serve different purposes.
Does thinkorswim require a funded account just to try it?
Schwab documents no minimum funding amount to open an account and use the platform. A 30-day Guest Pass also provides simulated paperMoney access without a brokerage account. Live trading still requires the appropriate account, funds and product permissions.
Does thinkorswim have a heat map?
Yes. Desktop MarketWatch > Visualize offers Heat Map and Index Watch. Finviz also offers market maps. Compare the selected universe, measurement period and data timestamps rather than treating heat maps as exclusive to Finviz.
Can any thinkScript chart study be pasted into Stock Hacker?
No. Custom Study filters require exactly one plot and do not allow secondary aggregation inside the script. Set the filter aggregation and, where available, the extended-hours option explicitly. A chart study can need changes before it works as a scan.
Can Pineify convert either screen or execute its signals?
Market Screener displays supported technical fields for collections. It does not automatically translate Finviz filters or thinkScript, export the table as Pine code or place orders. An account with Expert or higher is required for full screener access.
