Finviz vs. StockCharts: Filters, Scan Formulas & Chart Workflows
Finviz and StockCharts can narrow a research list in different ways. Compare field filters with scan formulas, distinguish daily-bar updates from minute-bar scans, and check the data subscription before moving candidates to a technical watchlist.

Finviz vs. StockCharts vs. Pineify
Review charting flexibility, relative strength metrics, layout customization, and subscription pricing.
| Dimension | Finviz / Elite | StockCharts | Pineify Market Screener |
|---|---|---|---|
| Research focus | Stock and ETF filters, valuation fields, maps and charts. | Technical charting, custom scan formulas and SCTR peer rankings. | Supported technical readings across a symbol collection. |
| Chart tools | Interactive chart views; Elite adds intraday multi-layout charts. | SharpCharts, ACP, Point & Figure, PerfCharts and other specialist views. | Indicator table for comparing symbols; not a replacement for either chart workbench. |
| Rank versus volume | Performance and relative-volume fields measure different things. | SCTR is a technical peer-group rank, not a volume ratio. | Each technical field has its own scale; no automatic SCTR reproduction. |
| Scan period | Inspect each filter definition rather than assuming chart intervals apply to every screen. | Daily, weekly and monthly scan bars. Current daily bars can update intraday. | Eight selectable intervals: 1m, 5m, 15m, 30m, 1h, 2h, 4h and 1d. |
| Data and refresh | Regular stock quotes are currently documented as 1-minute delayed; Elite stock quotes are real time. | Default US BATS feed; other quotes may be delayed. Exchange data plans are separate. | Visible active collection polls every 60 seconds; provider timestamps remain separate. |
| Saved work and history | Elite includes saved presets, configurable views and data exports. | Basic/Extra/Pro save 1/200/500 scans. Historical scan dates identify matches, not strategy returns. | 15 collections, 100 symbols per collection and up to 20 indicator columns. |
| Current subscription cost | Elite $39.50/month or $299.50/year; annual billing is not a monthly subscription. | Basic $19.95, Extra $29.95, Pro $49.95 monthly. Annual prepayment currently adds a thirteenth month; data fees are separate. | Expert or higher for full access; check current Pineify pricing. |
| Code and execution | A filter or CSV table is not a TradingView strategy. | StockCharts scan syntax is not Pine Script. | No matrix-to-Pine export, competitor-rule import or broker execution. |
Practical Routine
Preserve the Meaning of a Candidate List
A ticker list does not preserve its original scan definition. Keep the period, peer universe, data feed and observation time.
Step 1: Save the Selection Rule
Record the screen conditions and the date they were evaluated. For an SCTR threshold, include the peer universe. A historical scan returns candidates for that date; it does not establish returns, drawdown, trading costs or order fills.
Step 2: Inspect a Separate Technical View
Add supported symbols and select technical fields and an interval. Check the same listing and session on a chart. Pineify does not carry over a StockCharts formula or SCTR rank, and a refreshed table does not prove an entry will be profitable.
A Noon Update Is Still a Daily-Bar Scan
Suppose a scan compares price with a 20-day simple moving average at noon. Updating today's unfinished daily bar changes the latest input, but the lookback still counts days. A 20-bar average on a five-minute chart uses a different sequence. Matching the number 20 does not make the two conditions equivalent.
StockCharts documents Last Intraday Update as using a current daily bar that can be a few minutes old. If your rule requires a completed daily close, a midday match is provisional. If your rule requires five-minute bars, changing the daily scan's update setting does not implement that rule.
SCTR answers a different question: where a security ranks against its peer group using weighted technical measures. A rank near 90 is neither a 90% gain nor a 90% chance of success. A relative leader can still decline in price. Preserve the universe and timestamp rather than substituting a relative-volume field for the rank.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the practical difference between Finviz and StockCharts?
Finviz provides stock and ETF filtering, maps and chart views. StockCharts combines charting tools with a scan language and peer-group technical ranks. Choose by the question you need to answer: a field-based shortlist, a technical scan formula or a chart comparison.
Does StockCharts support five-minute scans?
Its Scan Engine uses daily, weekly and monthly bars, not one-minute or five-minute bars. Last Intraday Update refreshes the current daily bar; it does not change the bar duration. Intraday charts and intraday scan periods are separate capabilities.
What does SCTR measure?
StockCharts Technical Rank ranks six weighted technical indicators within a defined peer group on a 0.0-to-99.9 scale. It is not relative volume, a return forecast or a probability of profit. Record the SCTR universe and observation time when comparing securities.
Do higher StockCharts plans include every real-time exchange feed?
No. Subscription features and data plans are separate. The default US real-time feed uses BATS; official exchange feeds have additional fees. Check the feed and timestamp, not only the Basic, Extra or Pro label.
Can a screen be transferred into Pineify as a trading strategy?
No automatic rule conversion is provided by Market Screener. You can add supported symbols and configure available fields in a separate collection. Full access requires an account and Expert or higher. The table does not export a Pine strategy or place orders.
