VOLD on TradingView: advancing minus declining volume

The VOLD indicator measures advancing volume minus declining volume across a market. TradingView lists USI:VOLD for the NYSE and USI:VOLDQ for Nasdaq. A positive reading means more volume belongs to advancing issues; a negative reading means more belongs to declining issues. This exchange breadth series differs from the up/down volume of the stock currently on your chart. Verify both input symbols, their timestamps and their session before interpreting the difference.

Choose an exchange and verify its symbols

TradingView identifies the following instruments as US Statistical indices. Use the full USI prefix and check the displayed name in Symbol search. The Nasdaq series covers the named Nasdaq breadth universe; do not assume it is restricted to the Nasdaq-100. Keep every input in the same market.

  • Open each component separately before opening VOLD. Confirm that it has observations for the date and interval you intend to study.
  • Read the statistical value in the Close field at the selected bar. The separate Volume field is not the advancing or declining total encoded by this index.
  • An exchange label identifies the series, but it does not document every eligible issue type or the full feed methodology. Keep those details as provider questions if your study requires a common-stock-only universe.

Understand what enters advancing and declining volume

The VOLD explanation published by its script author stokedstocks classifies issues against the previous session close and groups their day volume on the advancing or declining side. An issue can change groups during the day. In that definition, a small move through the reference close can move its accumulated volume between groups; VOLD is not a count of shares bought versus shares sold.

  • If an issue with 10 million shares of day volume moves from just above the previous close to just below it, its contribution changes from +10 million to -10 million. With everything else held fixed, the difference changes by -20 million. This is a hypothetical classification example, not 20 million new shares traded.
  • The McClellan Oscillator based on advancing and declining issue counts measures a different input. A heavily traded issue can affect volume breadth much more than a lightly traded issue, even though each counts as one issue.
  • TradingView Up/Down Volume classifies lower-timeframe bars for the current symbol. It does not reconstruct exchange-wide advancing and declining volume. Likewise, a fast/slow volume oscillator describes a volume series over time rather than subtracting these two breadth groups.

Compare the raw difference with the volume ratio

Let U be advancing volume and D be declining volume from one matched observation. VOLD = U - D. The ordinary volume ratio is U / D when D is positive. The optional normalized difference is 100 × (U - D) / (U + D) when the total is positive. These are distinct scales. The following invented observations use millions of shares and are not current market readings.

  • Case A: 600 - 200 = 400; 600 / 200 = 3; 100 × 400 / 800 = 50%. Case B triples both inputs, so the difference triples while the ratio and normalized difference stay unchanged.
  • In Case A, advancing volume is 600 / 800 = 75% of the combined advancing and declining volume. The normalized difference of 50% is not that 75% share, and the denominator excludes unchanged volume.
  • An ordinary U / D ratio cannot be negative for nonnegative inputs. A script displaying -3 when declining volume dominates is using another convention, often -D / U. Read its formula before transferring thresholds.
  • If U = 200 and D = 0, VOLD is +200 but U / D is undefined. A tiny positive D can produce an extreme ratio. Never repair missing values by substituting zero or a small denominator.

Reconcile the displayed fields in TradingView

Start with a time-based intraday chart and one completed observation during the intended cash-market session. In Symbol search, open USI:VOLD. TradingView also supports spread expressions: USI:UVOL-USI:DVOL for the difference and USI:UVOL/USI:DVOL for the ratio. These are chart-symbol formulas, not Pine Script source.

  • For the hypothetical Case A, a UVOL Close of 600M and DVOL Close of 200M imply a VOLD Close of 400M and a ratio of 3. A difference outside display rounding needs investigation before an alert is trusted.
  • Use close-to-close comparisons for this audit. Subtracting separate daily highs does not prove the difference ever reached that level at one instant. TradingView documents separate daily and intraday spread calculations.
  • A chart interval samples the series; it does not establish the feed update cadence. If the chart creates bars while one input stays stale, a changing timestamp alone is not proof of a fresh underlying breadth observation.

Check the session, updates and missing-data cases

NYSE lists its core session as 09:30 to 16:00 Eastern Time on a normal trading day, with holidays and early closes listed separately. That calendar is a reference for a cash-session study, not proof that every USI series updates throughout those hours. The public symbol pages checked for this guide do not specify one guaranteed refresh interval or full session policy for these feeds.

  • Inspect any Data is delayed message and record the source timestamp, chart timezone and capture time. Switching to a shorter interval or buying an unrelated exchange feed does not establish freshness for USI.
  • For a repeatable check, record both components near the session open and again later, then compare their values and timestamps. Label the observation unavailable whenever freshness cannot be established.
  • If the inputs are cumulative day totals, do not sum every intraday observation again. Repeatedly adding the same accumulated volume counts it more than once.
ConditionRequired treatment
One component is absentShow unavailable and stop the calculation. Do not replace it with SPY, QQQ or the current stock volume.
One component is delayed or frozenDo not combine it with a newer observation. Check chart status and the provider before treating the result as live.
A futures or crypto chart continues overnightKeep the cash-market breadth session separate. An overnight price bar does not imply a new VOLD observation.
A new trading day startsCheck the first valid observations and session reset. Do not carry yesterday's breadth forward as today's signal.
Both inputs are valid zeroesThe difference is zero, but the ratio is undefined. Record that no classified volume is present.

Write an observable rule and preserve the evidence

A testable research condition could be: during a specified cash session, mark completed observations when the ordinary U / D ratio first moves above 2, provided both inputs are present, D is positive and the timestamps match. The threshold is an example hypothesis, not a recommended entry. Decide separately which instrument you would trade, what invalidates the setup and how risk would be limited.

  • Give the Pine Script AI Coding Agent the exact symbols, field, interval, session, ratio convention and missing-data policy when requesting a chart helper or alert. Review the generated calculation against the component charts before using the alert.
  • In Trading Journal, record the original hypothesis, both input values, observation time, feed status and chart screenshot. Add the outcome afterward without rewriting what was known at the decision time.
  • Save rejected cases as well as valid signals. A stale input, an absent series or a rule labeled only after the price move is not evidence of a usable live condition.
Where Pineify fits

Pine Script AI Coding Agent

Request a chart helper or alert from your verified VOLD data contract. Specify symbols, timing and unavailable states, then inspect and test the generated source. Code generation cannot supply missing exchange breadth data.

Also useful: Trading Journal. Keep the hypothesis, input values and screenshots with your trade record, then review whether the observation was available when the decision was made.
