Arms Index (TRIN): breadth, volume and data inputs

The Arms Index, also called TRIN, divides the advancing-to-declining issue ratio by the advancing-to-declining volume ratio: TRIN = (A / D) / (AV / DV). All four inputs must describe the same market and observation time. With positive inputs, a value below 1 means average volume per advancing issue exceeds average volume per declining issue; above 1 means the reverse. It is a market breadth measure, not a calculation from one stock chart.

See the decision guide

Derive TRIN from two ratios

Fidelity and TD describe the Arms Index as an issue ratio divided by a volume ratio. Let A and D be issue counts, with AV and DV their aggregate volumes. For strictly positive inputs, the same formula can be rearranged as (DV / D) / (AV / A). This shows why the reading compares average volume per declining issue with average volume per advancing issue.

  • Record how the provider defines an advance or decline, including its reference price. Unchanged issues do not belong in either side of this formula.
  • Keep volume units consistent. Millions of shares divided by millions of shares is valid; shares divided by dollars measures something else.
  • The average-volume interpretation is an algebraic consequence of the formula. It does not mean that every advancing or declining issue traded the same volume.

Two cases with identical market breadth

Both hypothetical observations have 1,800 advancing issues and 1,200 declining issues. Only the volume distribution changes. Volumes in the table are millions of shares, measured over the same session. These are arithmetic examples, not current market readings or strategy results.

  • Case A: (1,800 / 1,200) / (900 / 300) = 1.5 / 3 = 0.50. Average advancing volume is 500,000 shares per issue; average declining volume is 250,000.
  • Case B: (1,800 / 1,200) / (600 / 600) = 1.5 / 1 = 1.50. Average advancing volume is about 333,333 shares per issue; average declining volume is 500,000.
  • Case B still has more advancing issues. Its TRIN above 1 reflects greater average volume on the declining side, not a majority of stocks declining.
  • For a boundary check, keep the same counts and use AV = 600 million and DV = 400 million. Both ratios equal 1.5, so TRIN is 1 despite unequal counts and unequal total volumes.

Reject zero, missing and inconsistent observations

The ratio-of-ratios expression needs D and DV to be nonzero, and AV / DV must also be nonzero. A practical implementation can require all four inputs to be present and strictly positive. That stricter rule is an explicit data policy, not a claim that every possible zero numerator is mathematically undefined.

  • Do not replace missing data with zero, carry a stale value forward silently, or clamp a denominator to a small positive number. Each changes the measured ratio.
  • The rearranged expression A × DV / (D × AV) can return zero when DV = 0 even though the original ratio is undefined. Validate the inputs before simplifying the calculation.
  • Very small positive volume denominators can produce large readings. Check data completeness and the stage of the session before interpreting an extreme.

Match the universe and the session in TradingView

An exchange-wide series and an index-constituent series describe different populations. TD explicitly identifies its documented TRIN calculation with NYSE stocks. Do not combine NYSE counts with Nasdaq volume, or common-stock counts with volume from a broader set of securities. A similarly named TradingView symbol is not proof that the definitions match.

  • For intraday TRIN based on session-to-date volume, use counts and volume totals evaluated at the same point in that session. Do not mix those totals with five-minute interval volume.
  • An end-of-day value uses the final matched counts and volume totals. Averaging intraday TRIN readings does not generally equal TRIN calculated from the closing inputs because division is nonlinear.
  • TradingView documents that requested data can have gaps and unconfirmed values. Specify gap handling and observation timing; the close of a five-minute chart bar does not finalize a daily breadth feed.
  • Verify available feeds in your own account. A single stock, ETF or crypto OHLCV series does not contain the four market-wide inputs, and Pineify cannot reconstruct them from that chart alone.

Keep interpretation separate from a trading rule

The level 1 is a mathematical reference, not an optimized entry or exit. Below 1, average volume per advancing issue is higher; above 1, average volume per declining issue is higher. Neither condition specifies the next price move. Fixed overbought or oversold levels require evidence for the selected market, sampling schedule and any smoothing applied.

  • If smoothing TRIN, label the average type, length and sampling period. A moving average of TRIN is a different series from a ratio constructed from separately averaged inputs.
  • For a trading test, define executable entries, exits, position sizing and costs separately. Keep data confirmation timing consistent between historical testing and live alerts.

Specify a verifiable implementation for Pineify

After confirming access to the four matching feeds, use the Pine Script AI Coding Agent to draft or review the calculation. Supply the exact symbols, universe, session, source fields and confirmation policy. Request the four raw inputs, both intermediate ratios and final TRIN as diagnostic outputs so you can reproduce the worked cases.

  • Specify the strict positive-input policy and an unavailable state that also disables threshold alerts.
  • Request a reference line at 1. Any additional threshold should be labeled as a user setting, with no claim that it predicts a profitable trade.
  • Review the generated source, validate Pine syntax and compare completed observations with the provider. Syntax validation cannot establish data compatibility or trading performance.
