Strategy research and execution review

A Trading Journal for Pine Script Strategy Reviews

A strategy test describes simulated orders. Your broker statement describes executions. Keep both records, label the script version, and explain the differences before comparing performance.

Pineify Journal provides trade records, setups, tags and notes for that review. It does not automatically identify the script behind a trade or sync every TradingView strategy execution.

Keep the test and the execution identifiable

TradingView’s broker emulator documentation explains how simulated orders use chart data and fill assumptions. Those orders are not broker confirmations. Save the relevant calculation and fill settings with the result; changing them can change the comparison.

Strategy identity
Keep a script version or saved revision, input values and setup name. If the rules change, begin a new version rather than combining its results with the old one.
Test environment
Record the symbol and exchange, timeframe, chart type, session, test dates, data source, starting capital, order sizing, commission and slippage assumptions.
Execution evidence
Keep signal time, order time and actual fill time distinct, including timezone. Preserve broker order identifiers, partial fills, cancelled orders and fees outside the summary if needed.
Dataset label
Label historical simulation, forward simulation, paper account and live account separately. Preserve missing or unmatched observations; do not force a one-to-one match when there was no execution.

Same idea, different fills and costs

Fictional USD share example: both records buy and completely sell 10 shares. The simulation uses $100 entry, $103 exit and $2 total commission. The broker record uses $100.20 entry, $102.80 exit and $3 total fees. Assume no currency conversion, distributions or other cash flows.

Illustrative complete close; these are not customer results
RecordGross P&LRecorded costsNet P&L
Simulation10 × ($103 − $100) = $30$2$28
Actual fills10 × ($102.80 − $100.20) = $26$3$23

The $5 net difference consists of $4 from the two fill-price differences and $1 from costs. It is not a second loss to deduct from the $23 actual result. This arithmetic explains these invented rows; it does not establish why the fills differed or predict future slippage.

For partial fills, compare matched quantities and preserve the unfilled or open remainder. For futures or options, use the correct contract value. The account-based Journal does not automatically apply a futures multiplier; see the futures calculation limits. A generic price-times-quantity formula is not valid for every instrument.

Investigate a mismatch before changing the strategy

  1. Match the version, symbol, side and intended observation. An alert time may precede order submission, and an order can remain unfilled.
  2. Normalize quantities, quote currency and contract values. Separate each partial close from the remaining position.
  3. Compare actual fills with simulated fills, then separately charged fees with modeled costs. Do not subtract embedded spread or slippage twice.
  4. Align the period and timezone. Count the same observations and state whether statistics use closed trades, realized portions or account returns.
  5. Keep unmatched rows visible. Excluding failed, skipped or losing signals after seeing the result changes the sample.

Keep model changes out of the evaluation sample

Record which inputs, setups and date ranges you tried. A favorable subgroup found after many comparisons is a candidate explanation. Freeze the proposed rule before observing a later sample, then report its costs, payoff sizes and sample size. A tag, high win rate or AI narrative does not establish causation or future profitability.

Use Pineify for a traceable review record

Choose a setup and session, add tags, and keep the script version and decision rationale in notes. Preserve the original test output and broker statement as source evidence. A setup label in Journal is not an automatic link to a Pine Script revision.

Manual entry and authorized Agent tools can maintain records. Import History is marked Coming Soon. Connected tools require the relevant account access, and their permissions can include Journal writes. Review what you authorize before giving a tool access to your records.

Historical summaries help you organize observations. They do not identify a guaranteed trading advantage, promise automatic strategy dashboards, or validate a generated trading rule. Confirm any proposed rule independently before relying on it.

Pine Script journal questions

Does Pineify automatically sync Pine Script trades into Journal?

The current Journal does not establish automatic TradingView strategy or broker execution sync. Import History is marked Coming Soon. Enter records manually or use authorized Journal tools, and verify the result against its source.

Is a Pine Script strategy fill an actual broker trade?

No. TradingView strategies use a broker emulator to simulate orders. A simulated fill, an alert and a broker confirmation are different records. A paper or live execution needs its own evidence.

How should I label different script versions?

Use an explicit version in the setup name or notes and preserve the original script revision and inputs. Do not edit a label so that older trades appear to use rules that were introduced later. Pineify does not infer a script version from a trade symbol.

Why can test P&L differ from my Journal result?

Check matched trades, quantity, currency, contract value, actual fills, fees, partial closes and date boundaries. The emulator’s fill assumptions can differ from execution. A difference is a reconciliation question, not automatic proof that either calculation is wrong.

Can I subtract modeled slippage again from actual fills?

Not when the actual fills already reflect that execution difference. Use actual entry and exit prices and separately charged fees for the execution result. Keep a modeled slippage scenario separate so the same cost is not counted twice.

Do strategy tags or AI observations prove an edge?

No. Labels organize records, and an AI explanation is a hypothesis. Report the sample, costs and groups examined, retain losing and unmatched observations, and evaluate proposed changes on later data without revising the rule after seeing the outcome.

Does a Pineify plan include every analytics feature?

Do not assume that from this guide. Journal access and connected Agent capabilities have their own current plan and authorization requirements. Check the app before relying on an integration; this page does not promise a free trial, a fixed lifetime price or unlimited strategy dashboards.
