Equity execution and review

Stock Trading Journal

A share count, price and date are only useful when they describe the same security on the same basis. Keep actual fills, corporate actions and decision notes together, then reconcile the result with your broker.

Pineify Journal supports trade records and review notes. It does not automatically import every stock execution, adjust splits or dividends, or monitor live sector exposure.

Four parts of a stock trade record

Execution
Ticker and listing, quote currency, direction, shares, actual entry and exit fills, timestamps with offsets, and costs. Retain each partial close and the open share count.
Corporate actions
Keep the issuer or broker notice, effective date and share adjustment for splits, mergers or symbol changes. Retain dividend entitlement and cash receipts separately from sale proceeds.
Decision context
Record the setup version, intended holding period, initial stop and reason for entry before the outcome. Add a sector or catalyst label with its definition and source date.
Account context
Keep deposits, withdrawals, open-position value and borrowing costs separate from realized trade P&L. A closed-trade list cannot show all current portfolio exposure.

A split followed by a partial sale

Fictional example: buy 100 shares at $80. A 2-for-1 split changes the holding to 200 shares with a $40 per-share purchase-price basis. Later, sell 80 shares at $43. Allocate $2 of total entry and exit costs to that close. There are no dividends or currency conversions in this example.

Illustrative USD quantities and values; not tax-lot accounting
RecordCalculationMeaning
Original purchase100 × $80 = $8,000Purchase-price amount before fees
After the split200 × $40 = $8,000Same purchase-price amount; twice the shares
Realized price gain80 × ($43 − $40) = $240Only the 80 sold shares
Realized net result$240 − $2 = $238After costs allocated to this close
Remaining holding200 − 80 = 120 sharesNot included in realized P&L

Comparing the $43 sale with the original $80 entry would mix pre-split and post-split units. Keep the original confirmation and a separate adjustment record. Do not count the split as a purchase or profit, and do not overwrite evidence without preserving the reason for the adjustment. Remaining shares and their allocated costs still need their own record.

The SEC explains the share-count and price relationship in its stock-split glossary. Pineify does not apply these adjustments automatically; the table is a reconciliation method, not a Journal feature demonstration.

Corporate events need execution evidence

Earnings and gaps

Save the issuer’s release timestamp and whether the trade preceded or followed it. If you record an options-implied move, retain its quote time, expiry and calculation; it is not a maximum possible move. Compare the intended stop with the actual fill. A gap can produce a worse fill, while a stop-limit order may not execute. See FINRA’s explanation of stop-order risks.

Dividends and cash movements

Keep a confirmed dividend receipt separate from the share-sale result. Include applicable withholding, borrowing or financing charges in the relevant ledger. An ex-dividend price change is not an extra loss to subtract again if it is already reflected in actual fills. Deposits and withdrawals change cash without being trading gains or losses.

Regular and extended sessions

Record the timezone, session and order conditions. Lower liquidity, wider spreads and partial fills can matter outside regular hours. Compare actual executions rather than assuming every trade in a session has the same cost. FINRA’s extended-hours disclosure describes these risks.

Review groups without mistaking labels for an advantage

  • Define sector, catalyst, market-cap band and holding-period groups consistently. Keep the source date for classifications that can change.
  • Compare sample size, average wins and losses, costs and position size. A high win rate alone does not establish a positive net result.
  • Use a stated return series and sampling interval for risk-adjusted metrics. Trade P&L divided by a chosen capital field is not automatically a portfolio return.
  • Record which groups you explored. A 55% win rate or 1.5 profit factor is not proof that a selected group will outperform later.
  • Measure concentration from contemporaneous open holdings and values. A list of profitable closed trades cannot reconstruct live sector exposure.

What the current Journal supports

Enter shares, entry price, partial closes and fees; add notes, tags, setups and sessions for review. The generic stock calculation uses directional price change times closed shares, less entered fees. Keep quote and account currencies consistent; do not assume automatic stock-currency conversion.

Automatic corporate-action processing, dividend ingestion, sector classification and live concentration alerts are not part of this workflow. Preserve the broker record and reconcile adjustments externally. Confirm current access and plan terms in the app.

Stock journal questions

What should a stock trading journal record?

Record the security and listing, currency, direction, shares, actual fills, partial closes, costs and timestamps. Keep the decision rationale, corporate-action evidence and cash receipts with the record.

Does Pineify automatically import TradingView stock executions?

No automatic TradingView execution import is established in the current Journal. Import History is marked Coming Soon. Maintain records manually or through authorized Journal tools and reconcile them against broker statements.

Does a stock split create a gain in my journal?

A split changes share count and the corresponding per-share basis. It does not create a gain by itself. Comparing an unadjusted entry price with a post-split exit price produces a misleading result. Pineify does not automatically process corporate actions.

How should I record dividends?

Keep the actual receipt, currency, payment date, withholding and any reinvestment transaction. Entitlement depends on the applicable corporate action. The Journal does not automatically ingest distributions, and a dividend receipt alone does not establish a profitable trade.

Can I use sector tags to decide what to trade next?

Tags organize observations; they do not prove a repeatable advantage. Compare sample size, payoff, costs and exposure on consistent definitions. Exploring many groups after seeing results can select chance patterns. Evaluate a proposed rule on later observations.

Does Pineify monitor live sector concentration?

The current Journal does not provide a live sector-exposure feed or automatic concentration alerts. Notes and tags can describe your classification; reconcile actual holdings and account exposure with the broker.

Should regular and extended-hours executions be separated?

Record the session, timezone and execution conditions. Extended-hours markets can have less liquidity and wider spreads. A session label does not show which hours an order was eligible to execute or guarantee a fill.

Can I treat options as equivalent share positions?

No. Options require their own contract multiplier, expiry, exercise or assignment records and risk measures. A stock share-count calculation does not represent option P&L or establish whether a stock position is hedged.

Start with a reconciled stock record

Check one completed trade and one partial close against the broker statement before relying on a larger report.
