Penny Stock Trading Journal
Record what you knew, what you ordered and what actually filled. A useful penny-stock journal makes incomplete exits, missing information and total dollar exposure visible before comparing percentage returns.
Use Pineify Journal to organize manual records and review notes. It does not automatically collect spreads, import TradingView executions or police your brokerage account.
Keep security, information and execution records separate
Low share price, small market capitalization and an OTC quotation describe different things. Record the security identifier, listing or quotation venue, currency and any symbol change. Do not infer liquidity, reporting quality or the amount at risk from the share price alone. FINRA explains the distinction in Low-Priced Stocks Can Spell Big Problems.
- Information available before entry
- Keep the issuer filing or announcement, publication time, time you read it, and your interpretation. A promoted social post is not the same evidence as an issuer disclosure. A catalyst label records a hypothesis, not proof of what caused a move.
- Order and fill evidence
- Retain requested shares, order type, limit or stop, broker order ID, each fill and its timestamp. Record unfilled shares, rejections, cancellations and halts separately. A quote or chart high does not establish an executable exit.
- Liquidity observations
- Save bid, ask, displayed sizes and their source time when available. If unavailable, leave them unknown. Daily volume alone cannot show the size you could sell at a given price, and a displayed quote can change before execution.
- Costs and remaining exposure
- Allocate actual charges to closes consistently. Keep remaining shares and any borrowing costs visible. A large percentage rise on a tiny fill does not offset a larger loss elsewhere without considering quantities and capital.
A profitable first exit can hide a losing full trade
Fictional USD example: buy 1,000 shares at $0.84. Sell 600 at $0.90 and the remaining 400 at $0.75. Total recorded entry and exit fees are $12. There are no other cash flows or currency conversions.
| Record | Calculation | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Entry amount | 1,000 × $0.84 = $840 | Purchase amount before fees |
| First exit | 600 × $0.90 = $540 | Price gain on this lot: +$36 |
| Second exit | 400 × $0.75 = $300 | Price loss on this lot: −$36 |
| Weighted exit price | ($540 + $300) ÷ 1,000 = $0.84 | Weight prices by shares, not by number of fills |
| Net result | $540 + $300 − $840 − $12 = −$12 | Full position loses after fees |
| Return on entry amount | −$12 ÷ $840 ≈ −1.43% | Specified trade denominator; not account return |
The two sale prices already reflect where the orders filled. Do not subtract a quoted spread again from this result. Compare a recorded decision-time quote with the fill separately when studying execution quality; a missing quote cannot be reconstructed from the trade’s profit.
Use the Journal for records; verify restrictions with the broker
Pineify supports manually entered trades, close records, notes, tags and setup/session organization. Use a note to retain the source and time of a catalyst; use consistent tags for the categories you intend to review. These are user-entered labels, not automatically verified news classifications or liquidity tiers.
Import History is marked Coming Soon. The Journal does not automatically capture TradingView executions or bid/ask spreads, enforce account trading restrictions, or recommend a penny-stock position size. The history CSV is a filtered summary, not a complete execution archive.
Do not use a journal’s trade count as account permission. FINRA’s Regulatory Notice 26-10 replaced the prior day-trading margin framework with new intraday standards, effective June 4, 2026, with a permitted firm transition through October 20, 2027. Confirm which framework and house requirements your broker applies to your account. Pineify is not a compliance engine.
Review failed exits and missing information, not only winners
- Reconcile closed and still-open shares before reviewing returns. Separate a canceled order from an executed trade and a halted position from a completed loss.
- Compare expected exits with actual fills and quantities. Preserve the original plan rather than rewriting it after the result.
- Keep unfavorable catalyst groups and trades with missing data in the review. Report the number of observations and missing records alongside any average.
- Check issuer filings and broker notices for splits, trading restrictions or security changes before comparing prices from different dates.
The SEC’s microcap risk bulletin describes liquidity and information risks. A journal can document those conditions; it cannot make an illiquid position easy to exit or establish a repeatable return.
For broader share accounting, see the stock trading journal guide. For short holding periods, use the scalping record and cost checklist.
Questions about this journal workflow
What makes a penny-stock journal useful?
Keep the issuer and security identity, information sources and publication times, order requests, actual fills, remaining shares and costs. Low price is not the same as low risk, small market capitalization or an OTC quotation.
Does Pineify import penny-stock trades from TradingView?
Import History is marked Coming Soon. Do not rely on automatic TradingView execution capture. Keep broker records and enter the trade and close details manually; notes and tags can hold your source context.
Should I deduct the bid-ask spread from realized P&L?
When P&L uses actual entry and exit fills, their prices already incorporate the execution. Deduct actual additional charges once. A quote-to-fill comparison is a separate execution measure, not another automatic deduction from realized P&L.
Can a winning partial exit make the whole trade profitable?
Not necessarily. Reconcile every sold lot and any shares still open. The example on this page has a $36 price gain on the first exit and a $36 price loss on the second, then a $12 net loss after costs.
Does Pineify enforce PDT or intraday margin rules?
No. Pineify Journal does not determine trading eligibility or enforce broker margin rules. FINRA’s 2026 rule change permits a transition period for firms; confirm your broker’s implementation and account requirements directly.
Can catalyst tags prove which news produces profitable trades?
No. Tags describe how you classified records. Preserve source timestamps, sample size, missing observations and losses. A favorable group selected after seeing returns is a hypothesis to evaluate on later data, not a demonstrated cause or future edge.
