Grid Search Optimization for TradingView Pine Script
Grid size depends on both ranges and steps. For example, 10 fast-EMA choices, 10 slow-EMA choices and 5 stop values produce 500 combinations. Decide which values are meaningful before running the search.
With Advanced or Expert access, Pineify Supercharged applies the configured grid in TradingView and records available result metrics. Runtime varies with the chart and strategy. Select candidates from the completed rows, then manually test them on a separate period.
What Grid Search Automates
Grid search makes the selected trials explicit. It reduces repeated input changes, while the choice of ranges, evaluation criteria and holdout period remains yours.
A Defined Search Space
The grid consists of the discrete input values you select. A completed run covers that grid; it cannot search values between steps or establish a global optimum outside the selected ranges.
Separate Holdout Evaluation
Choose candidate settings using the training period, then configure a separate holdout test manually. Record both sets of results without using the holdout to repeatedly retune the strategy.
TradingView Extension Workflow
Install Supercharged and open the strategy in TradingView. The extension interacts with supported settings and report fields; the chart and browser session remain part of the workflow.
Sortable Results and CSV
Review collected profit, drawdown and trade-count fields in the results table. Export the rows to CSV and preserve the original settings with the file.
Advanced or Expert Access
Grid search requires Pineify Advanced or Expert. Plus does not include Strategy Optimizer. Check the current plan comparison and checkout terms below.
Select Supported Inputs
Configure the numerical and selectable inputs available in the extension interface. Confirm each input can be changed correctly before committing to a large run.
Worked Example: Count the Grid Before Running
Consider a hypothetical EMA grid: fast length 5 to 25 in steps of 2, slow length 20 to 60 in steps of 4, and ATR multiplier 1.0 to 3.0 in steps of 0.5. The counts are 11 × 11 × 5 = 605 combinations. This is a counting example, not a measured customer result.
The slow-length values are 20, 24, 28 and so on through 60. A value of 38 is outside this grid and cannot appear as a searched candidate. The step size controls which points are evaluated; a finer grid adds work without guaranteeing a useful strategy.
Before viewing results, reserve a separate period and define the comparison criteria. After the grid completes, manually run the chosen candidates on that period with matching cost assumptions. A change in performance is evidence to investigate, not an automatic diagnosis or a profit guarantee.
Pineify vs. Manual vs. Other Optimizers
| Aspect | Pineify Supercharged | Manual TradingView | Other Optimizers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Search coverage | Configured discrete grid | Selected manual trials | Check supported search methods |
| Holdout evaluation | Separate manual run | Separate manual run | Verify validation implementation |
| Runtime | Depends on grid and chart session | Depends on trials and workflow | Measure on the same workload |
| TradingView workflow | Browser extension | Native settings and report | Check platform compatibility |
| Access | Advanced or Expert | TradingView plan limits | Check current plan terms |
| Results | Sortable table and CSV | Your recorded results | Check export fields |
For a fair comparison, verify each product against the same chart, strategy and output requirements. Current prices and features should come from its own documentation.
Every Feature You Get for Grid Search
Collected Result Metrics
The results view includes collected net profit, profit percentage, trade count, win rate, profit factor, maximum drawdown and average trade fields. Compare available columns rather than assuming a composite or Sharpe-based score.
Manual Holdout Checklist
Record the chosen candidates, training period and costs. Configure a separate test period yourself and compare its outcomes. The optimizer does not generate an automatic stability score.
Review Candidate Inputs
Keep the selected input values with each result row. Verify the intended settings in TradingView before running a follow-up test, especially when the strategy or chart has changed.
CSV Export of Collected Rows
Export collected result rows to CSV for further analysis. Keep parameter ranges and chart settings with the export; uncompleted trials and unavailable metrics should not be treated as measured results.
Monitor the Run
The extension depends on the active TradingView chart, UI state and report updates. Monitor pauses or errors and inspect completion status before treating the result set as a complete grid.
Preserve Experiment Records
Use saved results and CSV exports to preserve completed work. Record the strategy version, chart settings and date range alongside the file so later comparisons use the same assumptions.
When Grid Search Does Not Help
Grid search is powerful but it has limits. Here is when you should skip it:
- →A small candidate list. A small, explicit list of candidates may be practical to test and record manually.
- →7+ parameters and loose ranges. A 7-parameter grid with 10 values each contains 10 million combinations, above the current extension limit of 100,000 combinations. Narrow the ranges or reduce the varied inputs before running. The current extension has no genetic algorithm mode.
- →Strategy logic is broken. Check logic, repainting or lookahead issues, costs and data quality before searching. No metric threshold proves that the underlying strategy is ready for optimization.
