Pineify shows the latest daily values reported through its TradingView Alert pipeline. This page does not recalculate the indicator in the browser. It is an information tool, not investment advice.

What Engulfing measures

This bullish engulfing screener reports daily candle-body matches from Pineify market collections. A bullish match needs a bearish prior candle below its SMA 10 and a larger bullish body that contains the prior body; bearish matches reverse the direction and SMA comparison.

Calculation

Pineify receives the reported indicator fields from its TradingView Alert pipeline. The calculation follows this method:

Body size = absolute difference between close and open. The current body must contain both endpoints of the prior body and be strictly larger. Compare the prior close with the SMA of the 10 closes ending on that prior bar.

The page leaves missing readings unavailable. It does not fill a gap with an estimate or a browser-side calculation.

How to use this scan

Use this screen to review a watchlist before deciding whether to investigate a chart. Use the daily table to collect candidates, then review each symbol on the matching exchange and daily chart before considering any trade.

  1. 1Start in All, then search a reference symbol such as AAPL, SPY, or BTCUSDT. Verify liquidity separately.
  2. 2Compare the Engulfing reading with other Symbols in the same market collection.
  3. 3Open the chart to check price structure, volume and data timing before making a decision.

Reading the Engulfing signals

Read the value in context. A single daily result can narrow the list, but it cannot replace a chart review.

1

Bullish: prior close below its SMA 10, bearish then bullish candles, and a larger containing body.

2

Bearish: prior close above its SMA 10, bullish then bearish candles, and a larger containing body.

3

Neutral: the latest pair fails at least one rule. A missing reading is unavailable data, not a neutral pattern.

Where the signal can fail

This signal contains no volume, support, liquidity or follow-through test. It describes reported candles and does not establish a reversal or expected return. Educational information, not investment advice.

Engulfing cannot predict future prices. Confirm the setup and define your risk before acting.

Markets in this Engulfing scan

All combines Pineify's four default Screener collections. A Symbol that belongs to more than one collection appears once in All and stays available in each matching tab.

Data and cache method

This public endpoint requests daily snapshots and caches each indicator response for up to four hours. Seven shorter timeframes stay locked on the public page and are available in the full Pineify Screener, subject to sign-in and plan access.

The exact rules behind a matching row

Pineify reports the engulfing_state field. Both candles must have a positive high-low range and opposite, nonzero bodies. The comparison uses the immediately preceding candle; it does not search for any engulfing pair elsewhere in the visible history.

The exact rules behind a matching row
CheckBullish matchBearish match
Candle directionPrior close < prior open; current close > current openPrior close > prior open; current close < current open
Prior-bar contextPrior close < prior SMA 10Prior close > prior SMA 10
Body containmentCurrent open <= prior close; current close >= prior openCurrent open >= prior close; current close <= prior open
Body expansionCurrent close - current open > prior open - prior closeCurrent open - current close > prior close - prior open
  • One shared body endpoint is allowed when the other extends far enough to make the body larger. Matching both endpoints fails the strict size test.
  • A prior close exactly equal to its SMA 10 fails both directional context tests. A doji with open equal to close also fails the direction test.
  • Neither a prior small-body threshold nor a current above-average-body threshold is required. A gap is not mandatory, and the current close need not cross SMA 10.

Worked acceptance cases for the daily scan

These are hypothetical prices in the same currency, not observed trades. For the bullish cases, assume the prior bar opens at 101, closes at 99, has a high of 103 and a low of 98. Its preceding nine closes are 101, 102, 100, 101, 100, 102, 101, 100 and 104. Their sum is 911, so the prior SMA 10 is (911 + 99) / 10 = 101.

Open 99, close 101, high 104, low 97NeutralBoth endpoints match, so body size remains 2. Larger wicks do not fix the failed body-size test.
Open 99.5, close 100.5, high 104, low 97NeutralThe full high-low range covers the prior range, but the body from 99.5 to 100.5 does not contain 99 to 101.

Check every candidate against the same chart data

A pattern label is only the first check. The public table shows daily snapshots for the selected Pineify collections, not every listed security. Start with the collection and symbol search, then inspect bullish or bearish readings. The Market Screener supports filtering the Engulfing Pattern field when you need a directional shortlist.

  • Record the exchange-qualified symbol, selected collection, direction and bar date. An empty result says nothing about symbols outside that collection.
  • Check the table timestamp and underlying bar date. The public API can cache a response for four hours; a newly cached response may still contain an older market bar. Do not treat missing data as a failed pattern.
  • Open the result in TradingView and use ordinary daily candles for the same exchange and session. Different feeds, adjusted prices or synthetic candles can change opens, closes and SMA values.
  • For the reported bar, read both candles' open and close in the Data Window. Calculate the body endpoints and sizes, then compare the prior close with SMA 10 at the prior bar, not the current value.
  • Confirm that the reported daily candle has closed before treating its shape as final. Review volume, nearby support or resistance, liquidity and subsequent price action separately; none is included in this state.
  • Keep a review note with symbol, bar date, reported direction, body check, SMA check and any mismatch. Resolve a mismatch in data or rules before using the row as a candidate.

Why another engulfing scanner can disagree

TradingView documents engulfing as a body pattern, so covering the previous high-low range is unnecessary. Its built-in pattern indicators offer SMA 50, SMA 50 with SMA 200, or no trend detection. Pineify uses the prior close against SMA 10. Comparing labels without matching those settings can produce different results even on the same candles.

  • A long wick that crosses the prior high or low is not enough for Pineify. Both open-close endpoints must be contained.
  • An outside bar can fail because its body is too small, its candles share the same direction, or its prior close is on the wrong side of SMA 10.
  • Bullish describes a detected shape, not a buy order. The next session may gap down or the preceding decline may continue. There is no win-rate estimate in this screen.

Use a custom script only for rules the field does not include

Use Market Screener for the existing Engulfing Pattern field. If your definition needs a full-range engulfing rule, a volume threshold or a different trend filter, describe those differences to Pine Script AI Coding Agent and ask for a script for an explicit, finite symbol list. Review the generated source and test it in TradingView before relying on its output.

  • Specify the symbol list, daily timeframe, completed-bar requirement, body equality policy and trend rule. State whether the change should replace or supplement Pineify's current test.
  • Use the acceptance cases above to check the requested behavior, then add cases for each custom condition. A generated chart script does not add a new field to the hosted Market Screener or scan every market automatically.

Engulfing Pattern Screener FAQ

What does the Engulfing Pattern Screener show?+

This bullish engulfing screener reports daily candle-body matches from Pineify market collections. A bullish match needs a bearish prior candle below its SMA 10 and a larger bullish body that contains the prior body; bearish matches reverse the direction and SMA comparison. This page checks that indicator across Pineify's default stocks, crypto pairs, and ETF collections so you can narrow a watchlist without opening each chart first.

How should I read the Engulfing result?+

Bullish: prior close below its SMA 10, bearish then bullish candles, and a larger containing body. Treat the daily reading as a starting point, then compare it with price structure, volume, and your own risk rules.

Can Engulfing predict the next price move?+

No. Engulfing is calculated from reported market data and cannot predict the next move or guarantee a profitable trade. It can help you sort a watchlist for further research.

What timeframe does the Engulfing Pattern Screener use?+

This public page shows daily data only. Each visible Engulfing reading comes from the latest daily snapshot returned by Pineify's TradingView Alert pipeline.

Why are the shorter timeframes locked?+

The public page requests the daily timeframe only. The full Screener supports 4-hour, 2-hour, 1-hour, 30-minute, 15-minute, 5-minute, and 1-minute readings. Sign-in is required, and symbol visibility and access depend on your plan.

How often is the Engulfing data refreshed?+

The public API caches each indicator response for up to four hours. The table shows when its current cached response was created, although the underlying daily bar may be older when a market is closed.

Need more than daily Engulfing data?

The full Screener adds seven shorter timeframes, the complete technical indicator library, and editable Symbol collections.
