A date is required. Weekends or unavailable history can return no rows.

Requested date: not submitted. The initial request uses yesterday in UTC, which may not be a trading day. Compare the Date column with your request. FMP data may be cached for five minutes; missing P/E values are not zero. No constituent list or aggregation weights are supplied.

What Is a Sector P/E Ratio?

For an individual company with positive earnings, P/E relates its equity price to earnings per share. A sector statistic combines companies, but the aggregation method matters. This page displays FMP's returned multiple rather than calculating a simple mean or independently verifying every constituent.

How to Use This Sector P/E Tool

  1. 1

    Select a Date

Choose a date and select Load Data. The endpoint requires a date; the initial request uses yesterday in UTC. Weekends, holidays, and unavailable historical coverage can produce no rows. Check each returned date rather than assuming an automatic last-trading-day fallback.

  2. 2

    Compare Sector Valuations

Compare sector and exchange together. Different company mixes or earnings conventions can produce different multiples. A high value can reflect a low earnings denominator as well as optimistic growth expectations; a low value does not establish undervaluation.

  3. 3

    Export and Analyze

Export this page CSV saves up to 50 displayed rows. The ratio is shown to two decimal places in the table and retained at returned numeric precision in CSV. Refresh reloads the applied date and may return a five-minute cached response.

Understanding P/E Ratios by Sector

TC

Technology

Check whether reported profits include losses, stock-based compensation, or one-time items before assigning meaning to a technology-sector multiple. This table does not disclose those adjustments.

CC

Consumer Cyclical

For cyclical businesses, distinguish peak earnings from sustainable earnings. Falling profits can raise P/E even when a share price falls, so a multiple does not move predictably with the business cycle.

CD

Consumer Defensive

A defensive sector label does not guarantee stable returns or lower future volatility. Check the actual constituent businesses, margins, and balance sheets instead of using the label as a risk rating.

FN

Financial Services

For banks and insurers, review credit losses, capital requirements, and the earnings period. The snapshot does not supply those supporting inputs.

BM

Basic Materials

For commodity-sensitive companies, compare earnings across a cycle. A low multiple during unusually strong profits may reverse when commodity prices or costs change; the snapshot itself does not forecast those changes.

CS

Communication Services

Check how telecommunications, media, and other businesses are grouped by the provider. A sector-wide figure can conceal different capital intensity and growth profiles; it is not a valuation for every member.

Why Use Our Free Sector PE Snapshot?

Check the Aggregation Method

As an illustrative calculation, companies with market values of 100 and 900 and earnings of 10 and 30 have individual P/Es of 10 and 30. Their arithmetic mean is 20; aggregate market value divided by aggregate earnings is 1000/40 = 25. Neither example establishes FMP's method.

Cross-Exchange Comparison

Match date, sector classification, exchange, and methodology before comparing. A difference across exchanges may reflect different companies, not an opportunity to buy the same earnings stream more cheaply.

Free CSV Export

Save dated snapshots for a reproducible comparison. This page does not calculate historical averages, percentile ranks, sector rotation signals, or investment returns.

No Registration Required

The public lookup requires no account, but provider availability and coverage still apply. Missing numeric values remain missing; they are not substituted with zero or a sector estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the Sector PE Snapshot tool.

    • What does this sector P/E table show?

It displays FMP-reported P/E values by sector, exchange, and date. Pineify does not recalculate the ratios from constituent companies. P/E is a valuation multiple, not a percentage return or a timing signal.

    • Is this a simple average of all companies?

That has not been established from the endpoint documentation. The response does not provide constituents, weights, earnings periods, or loss-company exclusions. Arithmetic averages and aggregate market-cap-to-earnings ratios can differ, so do not assume a specific methodology.

    • Which date should I choose?

A date is required. The initial request uses yesterday in UTC, which may be a weekend or holiday. Select an earlier trading day if there is no data, and check the returned Date column. Available historical coverage depends on the provider.

    • What does a blank or negative P/E mean?

A dash means the response did not contain a finite numeric P/E; it is not zero. Finite negative values are retained as supplied, but a negative earnings multiple is not interpretable as a cheap positive-earnings valuation.

    • Can I export the data for free?

The public tool requires no Pineify subscription or sign-in. Export this page CSV downloads the displayed page of up to 50 rows. The FMP response can be cached for five minutes, and Refresh does not bypass that cache.

    • Does a lower sector P/E mean a better investment?

No. Differences can reflect growth expectations, earnings cyclicality, leverage, accounting, or the companies included. Compare consistent dates and methods, then investigate the underlying earnings. This single snapshot supplies no historical average or fair-value estimate.
