Hypothetical Ledger · Daily-Close Assumptions

Free Options Paper Trading Simulator

Explore option cash flows with $100,000 in virtual funds. Record standard-option lots at an assumed daily-close premium, refresh last-known marks manually, and inspect explicit exit scenarios. This ledger does not simulate broker execution or margin.

Daily-Close Assumptions
No Sign-Up Required

Hypothetical ledger using daily-bar closing premiums, not executable fills. First 250 standard 100-share contracts sorted by strike; expiration day and expired contracts are excluded from new entries. No margin, stock legs, fees, bid/ask fills, slippage, exercise, or assignment. Short entries are unconstrained educational liabilities: cash is not broker buying power. Equity uses signed last-known marks, which can be stale.

Practice option accounting with explicit assumptions

The simulator records hypothetical long and short option lots. Buying decreases cash and adds an option asset; selling increases cash and adds a short liability. At an unchanged mark, either entry leaves model equity unchanged. Changes in those marks create unrealized gains or losses.

How to use the ledger

  1. Choose an underlying and call or put, then load the chain. The first 250 rows sorted by strike are a partial sample, with only standard 100-share contracts expiring after today retained.
  2. Select an available expiry and contract. Review the daily-close premium and its source timestamp; the quote columns are context, not the assumed entry fill.
  3. Enter a whole quantity from 1 to 999 and record a hypothetical buy or sell. This page limits the ledger to 100 open lots. A sell creates an unconstrained short liability; it is not a covered-call or broker-margin workflow.
  4. Refresh position marks explicitly. Unavailable marks keep their prior value with a warning. Inspect the source time beside each position.
  5. Close a lot by entering an assumed exit premium. Record Model Equity adds a session observation; the table is not historical backtest data.

What this simulation leaves out

The model has no stock positions, spread execution, exercise, assignment, dividend processing, broker margin, commissions, or slippage. Daily-close entry and manual-exit assumptions may be impossible to execute. Short option losses can exceed the premium received, and short calls can have unlimited loss. Cash shown after short entries is not available buying power.

Expired contracts remain in the ledger until explicitly closed with an assumed price. Missing marks cannot establish actual settlement. You must not interpret paper returns, win rates, or last-known equity as evidence of live profitability.

Local persistence and recovery

Account records are validated before loading and saved together after initialization. Storage failures leave the session in memory and show a notice. Reset requires confirmation; existing legacy keys remain untouched. Export or back up important research separately before clearing browser data.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does this simulator model?

A hypothetical ledger with $100,000 starting cash and individual long or short standard 100-share option lots. Entry is assumed at an available daily-bar close. Closing requires an explicit user-entered hypothetical exit premium; neither action sends a broker order.

Are the prices live executable fills?

No. Daily closes, quotes, and the independent underlying price can be delayed, cached, or from different times. Refresh Open-Position Marks requests daily closes for held contracts; missing or expired marks retain their previous value with a warning. There is no streaming P&L.

What is excluded from the simulation?

Broker margin and buying power, stock legs, multi-leg execution, fees, bid/ask fills, slippage, liquidity, early exercise, assignment, and automatic expiration settlement are not modeled. Short lots are unconstrained educational liabilities and may have very large or unlimited loss; the cash balance does not show available buying power.

How is equity calculated?

Model equity equals cash plus long option value minus short option value, using each position’s last-known mark and quantity × 100. Unrealized P&L is signed (mark − entry) × quantity × 100. Manual exit assumptions determine realized P&L; these results do not validate a trading strategy.

What happens when a contract expires?

New entries require an expiration after the current UTC date. Existing lots are not automatically exercised, assigned, or settled. If a mark cannot be refreshed, it stays visibly stale. You may explicitly record a hypothetical closing premium; this is not a claim about actual settlement.

Is my ledger saved?

When browser storage is available, valid cash, positions, and closed history are saved locally after loading finishes. Corrupt or incompatible saved data is preserved without overwrite and the session runs temporarily in memory until you explicitly reset. Old legacy keys remain unchanged. Session equity observations are not saved across reloads.
