Margin Call Calculator

Estimate the maintenance threshold for one long stock position. Enter your broker’s requirement and keep all prices in the same currency.

Modeled Maintenance Threshold
33.33

Position relative to threshold

Above threshold

Equity / current position value: 44.44%

An above-threshold result is not a safety rating.

Downside Distance to Threshold
11.67
25.93% of current price
Current Position Equity
2000.00
Modeled Loan Amount
2500.00

Amounts use your input currency. No live prices or broker account data are fetched. The 25% default is an example, not a universal requirement.

How the Margin Call Price Model Works

This calculator treats one long stock position as the entire collateral for a fixed loan. At the threshold, current value minus the loan equals the maintenance fraction of current value. Solving that equation gives:

Threshold = purchase price × (1 − initial margin fraction) ÷ (1 − maintenance margin fraction).

For 100 shares bought at 50 with 50% initial margin, the loan is 2,500. At 25% maintenance, the threshold is 33.33 per share. At a current price of 45, equity is 2,000 and the equity ratio is 44.44%. These are hypothetical inputs, not a broker quote.

Enter the Position and the Broker’s Requirement

  1. Use the original purchase price, shares held and the cash contribution as a percentage of purchase value.
  2. Enter the applicable maintenance requirement from your broker. Changing it changes the threshold even if the stock price is unchanged.
  3. Enter a positive current price in the same currency. The calculator shows equity and the downward distance to the modeled threshold.

If the entered initial margin is below the maintenance percentage, the position would already fail this model’s requirement at the purchase price. The calculator allows this scenario to show the deficit; it does not approve a trade.

What This Calculation Cannot Tell You

It omits other positions, cash collateral, repayments, interest, fees and changes in house requirements. It does not calculate short-sale, futures, option, crypto liquidation or portfolio-margin rules. Use your broker’s account figures for those cases.

A broker may liquidate assets without first contacting you. Being above this modeled threshold does not guarantee time to respond or prevent a loss. Stop orders can execute beyond their trigger; stop-limit orders may remain unfilled.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does this margin call calculator model?

One long stock position with a fixed purchase loan and a constant maintenance percentage. It excludes other holdings, cash collateral, interest, fees, shorts, derivatives and portfolio margin.

How is the threshold calculated?

Loan = purchase price × shares × (1 − initial margin fraction). Threshold = loan ÷ shares ÷ (1 − maintenance fraction). This is the price where modeled equity equals the entered maintenance requirement, not a promised broker notification or execution price.

Can a broker sell without contacting me?

FINRA’s margin disclosure states that a firm can sell assets without contacting you and can raise house requirements without advance written notice. Consult your own margin agreement; this model does not predict the broker’s action.

Does a stop-loss guarantee protection?

No. A stop order can execute away from its trigger price; a stop-limit order may not execute. Neither guarantees that a margin deficit will be avoided.

What does 100% initial margin mean?

The purchase is fully paid in this model, so the calculated loan is zero and there is no borrowing-related threshold for this isolated position. That does not describe the rest of your account or eliminate investment losses.
