What is Lot Size in Forex?

In forex trading, a "Lot" represents the standard unit size of a transaction. The standard lot size is 100,000 units of the base currency. However, traders can also trade in Mini lots (10,000 units) and Micro lots (1,000 units).

Calculating the correct lot size is crucial because it directly translates your risk percentage into a tradeable volume. If your lot size is too big, a standard stop loss hit could cost you much more than your intended risk.

Formula and worked example

Raw lots = (balance × risk percentage / 100) / (stop pips × pip value per standard lot). For a USD 10,000 balance, 2% budget, 30-pip stop and USD 10 pip value, the raw result is 0.666667 lots. With a 0.01 step, round down to 0.66 lots: modeled loss is USD 198. Rounding up to 0.67 would instead model USD 201.

This tool assumes standard 100,000-unit forex lots. It is not a contract specification calculator for stocks, metals or other CFDs. A stop order may execute at a different price; position sizing does not ensure a particular equity curve.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do standard, mini and micro lots mean?

One standard lot is 100,000 base-currency units; a mini lot is 10,000 and a micro lot is 1,000. The displayed alternatives express the same exposure. Broker size increments and minimums vary.

Does changing account currency convert the pip value?

No live rates are fetched. When account and quote currencies match, the default pip value is 100,000 times the pair’s pip size. Otherwise enter the current broker pip value per standard lot in the account currency; the input is cleared when conversion is needed.

How is the displayed position calculated?

Risk budget = balance × percentage / 100. Raw lots = budget / (stop distance × pip value). Lots are rounded down to the entered step, and modeled risk is recalculated for that position. A result below one step cannot fund one increment under these assumptions.

Can this calculation guarantee my maximum loss?

No. It excludes fees, spreads, slippage, gaps and changing conversion rates. Check margin, broker limits and order execution separately. This free calculator does not place orders.
