What Is the Industry P/E Ratio?
For an individual stock, P/E divides share price by earnings per share on a specified basis. For example, a hypothetical $30 price and $2 EPS give 15 times earnings. An industry aggregate needs additional rules about constituents and weighting. This page displays the provider’s value rather than calculating that aggregate; its endpoint documentation does not establish those rules.
How to Use This Industry P/E Tool
- 1
Select a Date
Select a date and click Load Data. Empty results can reflect unavailable coverage; the tool does not search backward for the latest snapshot.
- 2
Compare Industries and Exchanges
Review the date, industry and exchange labels together. Different company populations or earnings definitions can make two P/E values unsuitable for direct comparison.
- 3
Export and Analyze
Refresh reloads the applied date. Export CSV includes every returned row, not just the visible page. Keep the date and source with any subsequent analysis.
Questions to Ask Before Comparing Ratios
What earnings basis is used?
Trailing, forecast and adjusted earnings are different denominators. Check the basis, reporting period and treatment of losses before treating a lower multiple as a bargain.
Which companies are included?
An exchange-specific industry group may contain a different mix of firms from another exchange. Company size and weighting can affect the aggregate.
Is the comparison point-in-time?
A snapshot date does not by itself prove which filings were available at that time or whether values were later revised. Check the data history before using it in a backtest.
What This Page Supports
Inspect a Dated Snapshot
Read the provider’s dated rows. This page does not calculate historical averages, valuation percentiles or a trend chart.
Frame Follow-up Research
Use a difference as a research question. Examine earnings quality, constituent businesses and balance-sheet risks before drawing an investment conclusion.
Free CSV Export
Export industry P/E data to CSV format for further analysis in Excel, Google Sheets, Python, R, or any data analysis tool of your choice.
No Registration Required
Use the public page without a registration step. Available rows and dates depend on the upstream data service.
