What the Sector P/E Table Contains
This page requests Financial Modeling Prep’s historical sector P/E endpoint for one selected sector. It displays provider dates, exchange labels, and reported multiples. Pineify does not reconstruct constituent earnings or calculate its own sector average.
Compare Like with Like
Keep sector, exchange, earnings period, and calculation method consistent. A simple average of company multiples differs from a ratio of aggregate market value to aggregate earnings. The endpoint description does not document enough detail to assume one method or to reproduce its values from this table alone.
A Synthetic Calculation Shows the Difference
Suppose two profitable companies have market values of 100 and 900, and earnings of 10 and 30, in the same units. Their multiples are 10 and 30. The simple mean is 20, while total value divided by total earnings is 1000 / 40 = 25. This example illustrates methodology, not observed sector data or the provider’s formula.
Changes in the Denominator Matter
With a fixed price of 100, earnings per share falling from 5 to 2.5 raises P/E from 20 to 40 without a price gain. A low multiple can reflect temporary peak earnings or risk. Zero earnings make the ratio undefined; negative earnings do not support the usual positive-multiple interpretation. Missing values are not zero and should not be filled silently.
Read and Export the Available Records
- Select a sector and load its records. Changing selection clears prior results.
- Check the date and exchange columns. Missing dates or exchanges cannot be inferred from a successful request.
- Use table pagination or export all returned records to CSV. Separate sector requests can be compared externally after matching definitions and dates.
The interface does not calculate a historical mean, fair value, cross-sector ranking, chart, or trading signal. The server caches requests for ten minutes; refreshing does not guarantee newly published data. Coverage, revisions, and methodology remain provider limitations.
Research Beyond a Multiple
Review underlying earnings quality and membership changes before interpreting a trend. This table cannot establish an investable historical universe or predict sector rotation. Record the retrieval date if using an export in research, because a historical observation may have been revised.
