What Is COT Analysis?
COT analysis compares reported futures positions over time. This page displays FMP analysis fields; it does not reproduce a full CFTC report or identify individual institutions. Legacy, Disaggregated and Traders in Financial Futures reports use different participant categories. A category label does not reveal the reason behind each position.
How to Use This COT Analysis Tool
- 1
Select a Date Range
Choose a "From" and "To" date to define the period to request, no longer than 90 days when both dates are set. Available rows depend on provider coverage; an empty result is not a zero position.
- 2
Review Market Sentiment
Check the Market Situation (Bullish/Bearish) and Market Sentiment columns as provider classifications. Their labels do not establish future returns, and this interface does not disclose an independently reproducible sentiment formula.
- 3
Inspect the Provider Flag
The Reversal Trend column passes through the FMP flag. Do not infer a hit rate, lead time or confirmed price reversal from a Yes value.
- 4
Export and Analyze
Use the Refresh button to reload data or Export CSV to download the current page (up to 50 rows and 16 fields) for further study. Download additional pages separately; Refresh can return a cached response.
COT Report Sectors Explained
Currencies
Currency futures positions cover specific exchange contracts, not the whole spot FX market. Match the contract and report date before comparing exposure.
Financials
Treasury and interest-rate contract positions can include hedges and speculative exposures. Gross position counts do not identify the motive for a trade.
Agriculture
Crop and livestock contracts have different sizes and maturities. A larger net contract count across two products is not necessarily a larger dollar exposure.
Energy
Energy contracts can reflect production or consumption hedges. Do not treat every commercial short as a bearish forecast.
Metals
Metals positioning is one input for research. This table does not separately measure physical demand, inventories or safe-haven flows.
Indices
Index futures positions can hedge cash portfolios. Category-level long/short totals do not identify an institution or its complete equity risk.
Why Use Our Free COT Analysis Tool?
Positioning Fields
Compare the returned long, short and net fields for a consistent contract. Check the underlying participant group and denominator before treating a change as meaningful.
Provider Classifications
Keep market-situation and reversal labels separate from the position counts. The page has no validation study establishing that these labels predict future prices.
Free CSV Export
Export the current page to CSV format for further analysis in Excel, Google Sheets, Python, R, or any data analysis tool. Build your own models on top of our data.
No Registration Required
Use this page without an account or a payment prompt. Date-range limits, provider coverage and service availability still apply.
Sources and Timing
Read the FMP analysis field example and range limit alongside the CFTC report descriptions. The example does not document the provider's signal formula. Check the CFTC release calendar and actual feed availability before backtesting: a Tuesday position date must not make Friday-published information available on Tuesday.
