VIX term structure in TradingView: spot, futures and roll dates

VIX futures term structure compares prices of different VIX futures expirations at the same observation time. An upward slope between two expirations is contango; a downward slope is backwardation. Spot VIX measures 30-day expected S&P 500 volatility, while VIX3M measures a 93-day horizon. Comparing those two indexes answers a different question from comparing futures months. In TradingView, verify the actual contracts, quote timestamps and roll settings before naming the curve.

See the decision guide

Separate spot VIX, VIX3M and futures contracts

Cboe publishes both volatility indexes and futures based on VIX. Their time horizons differ even when their displayed values happen to match. Keep index horizons separate from the days remaining until a futures settlement.

  • VIX at 20 is quoted in volatility points, conventionally interpreted as 20% annualized implied volatility. It does not mean the S&P 500 is expected to fall 20% next month.
  • A future settling in roughly three months is not VIX3M: its settlement concerns a later volatility window, whereas VIX3M covers a longer horizon beginning at the observation time.

Spot VIX, CBOE:VIXAn SPX-option-derived measure of annualized expected volatility over the next 30 days; the index itself is not directly tradable.Quote timestamp and 30-day index horizon
VIX3M, CBOE:VIX3MAn SPX-option-derived volatility index with a constant 93-day target horizon.Quote timestamp and 93-day index horizon
A dated VX futureA contract price tied to VIX settlement at a future date, associated with the forward 30-day volatility window at that date.Full contract identifier, final settlement date and days remaining

Build a comparable snapshot in TradingView

Search the exchange-qualified VIX and VIX3M symbols, then select the dated VX contracts you want to compare. For a monthly curve, explicitly choose monthly contracts; do not silently mix weekly expirations into positions called first month and second month. Use a table or separate price scales to retain the actual volatility-point values.

  • Write down a single observation time and timezone. For every row, preserve the source timestamp, data-delay status, quote type and contract identity. A shared candle date does not prove simultaneous quotes.
  • Compare like quote types: last trade with last trade or a consistently defined bid/ask midpoint. Label official daily settlements separately from live or delayed last trades.
  • Record the settlement date from the contract specification or exchange calendar and calculate days to settlement from the snapshot date. Sort by that date, not alphabetically by symbol.
  • If a required quote is missing or stale under your chosen policy, mark the comparison unavailable. A futures session can be active while an index has no fresh observation.
  • Plot futures maturity on the horizontal axis and volatility points on the vertical axis. Keep spot VIX as a separately labeled reference. A normalized percentage-performance overlay measures changes over time, not the current term structure.

Calculate contango and backwardation with a stated convention

Let F1 and F2 be positive prices of the first and second selected monthly futures at one timestamp. Define the spread as F2 - F1 and the percentage slope as 100 × (F2 / F1 - 1). This convention gives a positive number for contango. Other dashboards reverse the ratio, so compare formulas before comparing labels.

  • Assume the first example has 12 and 40 calendar days to settlement. The 10% is a price ratio across a 28-day maturity gap, not an annualized return or an expected profit over the next month.
  • If F3 = 19 in that same example, F2 to F3 slopes down even though F1 to F2 slopes up. Describe the specific segment or the hump instead of assigning one label to the entire curve.
  • A rolling futures position has changing prices, weights, collateral and costs. Its return cannot be calculated from this one snapshot spread alone.

Read the VIX / VIX3M ratio as a separate comparison

In TradingView Symbol Search, CBOE:VIX / CBOE:VIX3M expresses the index ratio. With synchronized positive observations, a value below 1 means the 30-day index is lower than the 93-day index; above 1 means it is higher. The horizons overlap, so the ratio is not an isolated forecast for days 31 through 93.

  • A ratio above 1 does not establish that F1 exceeds F2. Measure the futures pair separately before calling that segment backwardated.
  • Do not subtract the two volatility numbers to estimate a forward volatility. Combining different horizons would require a consistent variance and time convention, not simple subtraction.
  • Review matched closing observations for a ratio rule. Synthetic intraday highs and lows need not be simultaneous extrema of both underlying indexes.
Hypothetical indexesRatioWhat follows
VIX = 18; VIX3M = 2018 / 20 = 0.90The shorter-horizon index is 10% below the longer-horizon index.
VIX = 24; VIX3M = 2224 / 22 = 1.0909The shorter-horizon index is about 9.09% above the longer-horizon index.

Separate contract rolls from expiration and settlement

A continuous chart switch is a data-series event; final settlement is a contract event. TradingView documents switch markers that identify the old contract, new contract and activation date where the feature is supported. Check availability on the selected VX series, and verify the dated contract directly if that information is absent.

  • Hypothetical roll: dated contract A stays at 18 and B stays at 19.8. If an unadjusted continuous series switches from A to B, it rises 10% despite neither dated contract moving. A threshold crossed by that splice is not evidence of a fresh volatility shock.
  • Back-adjustment, where available, changes earlier contract history to remove roll gaps. Record the setting; adjusted historical levels are unsuitable as a substitute for the original dated-contract quotes in a past curve snapshot.
  • Use the actual exchange expiration calendar. Monthly and weekly VX expirations exist, holidays can alter dates, and assuming every expiry is a particular Wednesday can misidentify the remaining maturity.
  • VIX futures settle in cash using a Special Opening Quotation (SOQ). Its opening-option-price calculation can differ from the nearby displayed VIX index. Do not reconcile a final futures payoff against an arbitrary spot VIX close.

Define an observation rule and preserve it before the outcome

For a research monitor, specify the dated contracts, quote schedule, positive-denominator check and missing-data policy before choosing a threshold. Backwardation can accompany market stress, but it does not determine the next stock return. Any directional use needs a separate test with decisions made only from information available at the time.

  • Example specification: compare the two chosen monthly contracts on accepted completed bars; flag a change from F2 >= F1 to F2 < F1 only when both the current and preceding observations are valid. Treat a contract replacement as a new comparison, not a threshold crossing.
  • Give that specification to Pineify's Pine Script AI Coding Agent to draft a chart aid or alert. Inspect the symbol requests and confirm several values manually in TradingView. Syntax checks cannot certify quote freshness or trading performance.
  • In Trading Journal, record the hypothesis, observation time, exact symbols, values, expiry dates and a saved screenshot link in your notes. Add the later review separately so the original observation is not rewritten to fit the outcome.
  • An alert or journal entry cannot recover a quote that was missing at the decision time. Keep unavailable observations visible in the research record instead of assigning hindsight regime labels.
