TradingView platform comparisons

MetaStock vs TradingView: exploration, formulas and charts

MetaStock suits a workflow built around Formula Language, Explorer scans and testing systems across selected securities. TradingView suits chart analysis, Pine indicators and chart-based strategy simulation, with Pine Screener available for custom scans. Choose by the universe, data package and test output you need. A MetaStock exploration is not a Pine strategy, and converting its filter alone does not define entries, exits or fills.

Formula editing, scanning and testing are separate jobs

MetaStock uses Formula Language in its Indicator Builder, Explorer and System Tester. Each tool consumes rules for a different purpose. TradingView separates indicators from strategies, too: an indicator can show a condition, while a strategy needs an order model. Neither platform can infer a complete trading system from a screening threshold.

Check the data package before comparing subscription costs

MetaStock currently separates D/C for daily-chart work from R/T for intraday use. The old DataLink product URL redirects to XENITH for Daily Charts. That daily service supplies continuously delayed charts and supports downloads through the Downloader; it is not a promise of real-time intraday bars. Product and data details were checked on October 17, 2026.

  • D/C offers purchase and subscription options, including data packages; the official page also describes using your own data. Confirm the actual bundle, maintenance terms and supported symbols before buying.
  • MetaStock R/T is intended for intraday analysis and its subscription includes access to XENITH. Confirm exchange entitlements and the required instruments with the provider.
  • A paid TradingView plan does not automatically include every exchange's real-time feed. Some data needs a separate subscription; the default US equity feed may differ from the primary listing exchange.
  • Compare total software, data and exchange costs for the same instruments and interval. This page quotes no prices because a plan headline alone does not describe an equivalent package.

Compare the actual scan universe

Explorer works on the securities selected for the exploration. Pine Screener now supports custom watchlists and indices, so saying TradingView cannot scan custom Pine conditions is outdated. Its documented constraints include one indicator per screen, a 500-bar calculation window and supported fixed timeframes; strategies are not supported. Check the current requirements before porting a long-history study.

  • Write down the instrument list and scan timestamp. Two scans with different exchange symbols, index membership or market sessions are different experiments.
  • Keep a result column for each input behind the filter. A pass/fail flag alone hides whether a disagreement came from price, volume or initialization.
  • A scan against today's list does not establish a historical universe. Keep membership records if the research question concerns past candidates.
  • Use the same volume definition. Shares, contracts and tick volume are not interchangeable; missing volume should be an explicit failure state.

A small exploration rule with visible arithmetic

Use this hypothetical daily-equity filter: after a candle closes, its close must be strictly above the highest high of the preceding three bars, and its volume must exceed 1.5 times the average volume of those same preceding bars. Both lookbacks exclude the current bar. The three-bar window keeps the arithmetic visible; it is not a recommended trading setup.

  • In MetaStock, make the preceding-window price threshold, preceding-window volume mean and final filter separate exploration outputs. Its Ref function can reference previous values; verify that the offset points backward.
  • Including the current high in the breakout threshold makes a strict close-above-high test impossible on ordinary OHLC bars, because close cannot exceed its own high.
  • Including current volume changes the denominator: (120 + 80 + 160) / 3 = 120, so 160 / 120 = 1.3333. That fails a 1.5 threshold even though the intended prior-window rule passes.

Inspect the same condition on a Pine chart

This Pine v6 indicator exposes the prior high, prior average volume and volume ratio in the Data Window, and plots a binary Match value. Add it to an ordinary daily chart, keep Prior bars at 3 and Volume multiple at 1.5, then compare completed candles with the exploration. The final source passed Pineify syntax validation; no cross-platform run is claimed.

  • Open the same exchange-qualified instrument in both platforms. Match session, timezone, split adjustment and daily-bar boundaries before comparing the indicator.
  • Inspect several passing and failing candles in the Data Window. Reconcile the first differing raw input before changing a formula.
  • The script rejects missing observations in the prior window and requires a positive prior average volume. It does not substitute another feed or infer volume.
  • For Pine Screener, choose this indicator and filter Match equal to 1. Re-run after changing the source, inputs or timeframe. During an unfinished current candle, Match is 0 by design; check after the relevant session closes.
A screening indicator, not a strategy. Match = 1 requires a completed bar and valid prior observations.pine

A matching exploration still needs a system-test specification

The scan above has no exit, position size or execution price. MetaStock's Enhanced System Tester supports separate trading settings; a TradingView strategy likewise needs explicit entry and exit orders. Comparing their profit reports before those settings match tests different systems.

  • Decide whether every matching bar can enter, or only the first match while flat. Define re-entry, maximum positions, exit logic and what happens when signals compete for capital.
  • Specify the order timestamp and price. Pine's default market-order behavior normally fills on the next available tick, which is the next bar open in a historical bar-close test. Match MetaStock's delay and execution settings deliberately.
  • For a hypothetical 10-share purchase at a next open of $53, the entry value is $530 before fees. Using the $52 signal close instead understates the entry value by $10. This arithmetic says nothing about subsequent returns.
  • Record commission, slippage, stops and test dates. Multiple securities tested independently do not by themselves prove that a shared-cash portfolio was simulated.
  • Reserve a later period for evaluation after choosing parameters. Repeatedly selecting the best settings on the same history makes the reported result less informative about unseen data.

Use Pineify once the target rules are explicit

Give the Pine Script AI Coding Agent the rule specification, the completed-bar requirement and the expected pass/fail rows. The product supports creating and editing Pine code artifacts and requesting syntax diagnostics. Review the artifact, then compare its values in TradingView before adding strategy orders.

  • Supply only formulas and source you are entitled to use. A protected MetaStock add-on name or screenshot does not reveal its proprietary rules.
  • Keep the original exploration report and platform settings as reference material. Syntax validation checks code syntax; it does not prove matching feeds, signals or trade execution.
  • This workflow covers rewriting explicit indicator or strategy rules. It does not migrate accounts, read protected formulas or execute trades.
