Trading notes and execution evidence
Notion Trading Journal
Use a database row for each trade and a page for the decision behind it. Start with a reusable note, then define the fields and calculation rules your review needs. Notion supports formulas; this starter does not install a trading dashboard or connect a broker.
A reusable Notion trade note
This Markdown file is a page-body starter. Import it with Text & Markdown on Notion desktop/web, or copy it into a database template. It does not create database properties, relations, formulas or rollups.
This original starter is free to download. It contains blank prompts, not trading records or investment recommendations.
Download Notion note (.md)Set up the workflow
- 1
Create a small trade database
Add the properties below and enter three fictional records before importing a real archive. Set property types explicitly instead of accepting a currency-looking text column.
- 2
Make one reusable database page
Use the dropdown next to New, then New template. Put the supplied note sections inside it. Leave trade-specific IDs, dates and any relation targets blank.
- 3
Choose views by review task
Keep open positions separate from closed, reconciled records. Use a setup filter for comparison; keep account and currency filters visible.
- 4
Validate before adding volume
Reconcile counts, quantities, costs and net results against a small known ledger. A convenient view is not proof that the calculation population is correct.
Fields to keep consistent
| Field | Store as | Review purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Trade ID | Title | Use a unique ID; duplicate imports must not become extra trades. |
| Instrument, account alias, quote currency | Text or Select | Keep accounts and currencies explicit; changing a label does not convert money. |
| Status and setup | Select | Separate planned, open, partial and closed records. Use one spelling per setup. |
| Opened / closed at | Date, with time if needed | Record the execution time zone separately; created time is not a trade timestamp. |
| Quantity, unit prices, costs | Number | Define units and multipliers before using formulas. Unknown values remain missing. |
| Net result / result verified | Number / Checkbox | Only reconcile completed results into a closed-trade review. |
| Evidence and review | URL, Files or page content | Link the source statement and record the reason for a revision. |
Notion can calculate; the accounting definition is your responsibility
Formula properties can calculate from other properties. Relations and rollups can connect records. The useful question is whether your model handles direction, units, costs, partial exits and missing values—not whether Notion is categorically unable to calculate a metric.
For a fictional closed set with net results +20, −10 and 0 in one currency, a definition that includes breakeven trades gives a 1/3 win rate and a profit factor of 20/10 = 2. An open trade is not a fourth closed trade. With no losses, profit factor has a zero denominator; keep it unavailable rather than inventing a value. This is a validation example, not a ready-to-paste Notion formula.
A CSV import is not a complete trading system
Notion imports CSV rows as pages and columns as properties. Formulas and rollups need rebuilding; a new import does not create relations. Imports and merges add rows rather than updating existing records, so repeated imports can double-count a trade.
Preserve an untouched export. Map the Trade ID, dates and numeric columns first, inspect three rows, and compare row counts before merging a larger file. A Markdown note imported from this page supplies the narrative structure only.
Use a separate execution ledger when the database model is too simple
A single entry and exit price does not describe several fills or a partially open position. Keep an execution ledger linked by Trade ID, then carry only reconciled results into your review database. Retain the original fills when a formula or property type changes.
If you need a spreadsheet starting point, the linked Excel journal provides formula cells with stated unit and cost assumptions. Neither template proves a strategy works or turns a selected set of winning trades into executable rules.
Keep calculations connected to the note
Use the same trade ID in your note and numerical ledger. The Excel journal template provides a separate formula workbook with explicit units and costs. Check its assumptions before relying on the results.
For an account-based workflow, compare Pineify Trading Journal with a small reconciled sample. Its current Import History control is marked Coming Soon. This guide supplies no automatic note archive importer or one-click conversion of a trade log into a validated strategy.
Frequently asked questions
Is this a free Notion trading journal template?
The Markdown note supplied here is free to download without a Pineify account. It is not a prebuilt Notion workspace. Check Notion’s current plan terms for the storage, collaboration and other features you need.
Can Notion calculate win rate and profit factor?
Yes, a configured database can use formula, relation and rollup properties. You must define the included records and test the calculation. This guide does not claim that all templates already implement those metrics correctly.
Will the download create my database properties?
No. It contains the page-body prompts shown on this page. Create the typed properties separately and copy or import the note into the page template.
Does Pineify import a Notion database automatically?
This guide provides no Notion-to-Pineify importer. Pineify’s Journal Import History control is currently marked Coming Soon. Keep your archive and manually reconcile a small sample before choosing a migration workflow.
