What Opening Gap measures

A gap up screener finds openings above the previous close; a gap down screener finds openings below it. This page compares signed daily gap percentages across covered symbols. The opening gap is separate from the price change since that open.

Calculation

Pineify receives the reported indicator fields from its TradingView Alert pipeline. The calculation follows this method:

Gap (%) = 100 x (current open - previous close) / previous close. The payload rejects a zero or unavailable previous close. For the stock-research examples here, additionally require a positive previous close and prices from the same symbol, session and adjustment basis.

The page leaves missing readings unavailable. It does not fill a gap with an estimate or a browser-side calculation.

How to use this scan

Use this screen to review a watchlist before deciding whether to investigate a chart. Select a stock collection, compare the signed gap values, then confirm the matching daily bar, session, corporate actions and liquidity on the chart. The public search box finds symbols; it does not run a numeric screening expression.

  1. 1Start in All, then search a reference symbol such as AAPL, SPY, or BTCUSDT. Verify liquidity separately.
  2. 2Compare the Opening Gap reading with other Symbols in the same market collection.
  3. 3Open the chart to check price structure, volume and data timing before making a decision.

Reading the Opening Gap signals

Read the value in context. A single daily result can narrow the list, but it cannot replace a chart review.

1

A positive gap means an opening above the prior close. For an example gap-up rule of at least 2%, +2.00% qualifies; +1.99% does not.

2

A negative gap means an opening below the prior close. For an example gap-down rule of at most -2%, -2.00% qualifies; -1.99% does not.

3

The state uses a price-unit threshold of max(0.25 x ATR14, one minimum tick): an upward gap at least that large is bullish, a downward gap at least that large is bearish, and other cases are neutral. This differs from the example 2% rule; use the numeric gap for that test.

Where the signal can fail

This daily snapshot is not a live pre-market scanner. It does not certify regular-session inputs or expose their adjustment settings. Gaps can reverse after the open, and stale prints or corporate actions can resemble news-driven repricing. Educational information, not investment advice.

Opening Gap cannot predict future prices. Confirm the setup and define your risk before acting.

Data and cache method

This public endpoint requests daily snapshots and caches each indicator response for up to four hours. Seven shorter timeframes stay locked on the public page and are available in the full Pineify Screener, subject to sign-in and plan access.

Define the session before applying a gap threshold

For a regular-session stock scan, use the previous completed regular session close and the current regular session open. On a holiday or weekend, previous means the preceding trading session, not the previous calendar day. Fix the exchange and its session timezone. Do not substitute an after-hours last trade for the regular close.

Define the session before applying a gap threshold
MeasurePrices comparedWhat it answers
Regular-session opening gapCurrent regular open versus previous regular closeHow far the stock opened from its previous regular close
TradingView Pre-market Gap %Pre-market open versus previous regular closeWhere the first pre-market price stood, not where it trades now
TradingView Pre-market Change %Latest pre-market price versus previous regular closeThe current pre-market move from that reference close
Change from openCurrent price versus the selected session openMovement after the open; this does not revise the opening gap
  • TradingView Gap % is based on the selected bar interval. A gap between two five-minute bars is not automatically the overnight regular-session gap.
  • An opening gap can exist even when the new bar overlaps the previous high-low range. The TradingView Gaps chart indicator instead detects separation between adjacent bar ranges; do not compare its count with this close-to-open percentage.
  • For a continuously traded crypto pair, the daily boundary depends on the feed and chart session. A small open-to-prior-close difference does not imply the same overnight event as a stock opening auction.

One stock can pass before the open and fail at the open

Assume a hypothetical stock closed its previous regular session at $100, first traded pre-market at $102, later traded at $105, and opened the next regular session at $101.50. All prices use the same adjustment basis. These invented inputs illustrate the definitions; they are not a market observation or a backtest.

One stock can pass before the open and fail at the open
ObservationCalculationResultAt least +2%?
Pre-market opening gap100 x (102 - 100) / 100+2.00%Yes
Latest pre-market change100 x (105 - 100) / 100+5.00%Yes, for a change filter
Regular-session opening gap100 x (101.50 - 100) / 100+1.50%No
Separate gap-down example: open $97.50100 x (97.50 - 100) / 100-2.50%Passes the at most -2% rule
  • The +5% pre-market move is provisional evidence for the upcoming regular open. The regular opening price must exist before the opening-gap test for that session can pass.
  • If price later reaches $104, the regular opening gap remains +1.5%. The price change from the $101.50 open is about +2.46%, a different measurement.
  • A separate stock opening at $103 passes the +2% gap rule. If it then trades at $99, the opening observation remains +3%, but the upside move failed to hold. A gap shortlist supplies no continuation guarantee.
  • Exactly zero means the two reference prices match. Missing prices, a zero or negative reference close, and an unobserved opening price are unresolved; do not convert them into a zero-gap result.

Remove adjustment mismatches before calling a gap

Use compatible prices on both sides of the calculation. TradingView adjusts historical chart prices for stock splits and offers a separate dividend adjustment setting where available. A chart with different corporate-action settings can disagree with an upstream screener even when the symbol matches.

  • Split example: before a 2-for-1 split, a stock closes at $100 and next opens at $51. Comparing raw $100 with post-split $51 produces -49%, which includes the share-unit change. On a split-consistent basis the prior close is $50, so the opening gap is +2%.
  • Dividend example: assume a $100 prior close, a $1 cash dividend and a $99 ex-dividend open, with no other price change. The unadjusted opening gap is -1%. That observation alone is not evidence of new selling pressure; total-return and cash-price charts answer different questions.
  • Do not compare a dividend-adjusted historical close with an unadjusted open. Record the adjustment setting, check the split or dividend event, and recalculate on one basis before retaining a candidate.
  • The public gap response does not include adjustment or session metadata. If the chart and snapshot cannot be reconciled, leave the candidate unconfirmed instead of assuming either number is wrong.

Add a minimum-liquidity rule without confusing it with gap size

An illustrative US-stock research rule is absolute opening gap of at least 2%, previous regular close of at least $5, and average volume of at least 500,000 shares over the previous 20 completed regular sessions. These cutoffs are examples to test, not recommended trading thresholds or proof that an order can be filled.

  • If the previous 20 sessions total 12,000,000 shares, the average is 600,000 and passes this volume floor. A total of 8,000,000 gives 400,000 and fails, even when the gap is +8%. Exactly 500,000 passes the inclusive floor.
  • Check the bid-ask spread and current session volume separately. Average daily volume cannot establish pre-market liquidity; an isolated thin trade can create a large reported percentage.
  • Do not compare accumulated early-session volume with a completed full-day total as if they covered equal time. Review an equivalent time-of-day baseline when assessing opening participation.
  • This public gap table contains gap size and state, not volume or spread. Use available volume fields in Market Screener and verify the completed-session average and current spread on the matching chart or broker quote. Keep missing liquidity data unresolved.
  • FINRA identifies lower liquidity and wider spreads as extended-hours risks. A passing screen is a candidate for review, not evidence of executable size or a suitable trade.

Confirm the snapshot and save a reproducible scan

Pineify reports gap_size_pct and gap_state from its TradingView Alert pipeline for the daily timeframe on this public page. Select a covered collection and retain the exchange-qualified symbol. The All tab combines the available collections; it is not every listed instrument. Cached responses can be reused for up to four hours, and the underlying market observation can be older.

  • Record the review time, Cached timestamp, collection, exchange, daily bar date, gap threshold and price adjustment basis. A freshly cached response is not proof of a fresh opening price.
  • Open the same symbol in TradingView and identify the two prices used. Confirm that the current relevant session has opened; a prior-session snapshot must not be relabeled as the current gap.
  • Separate the opening-gap test from any later confirmation. If your rule also needs the first five-minute bar to close above the open, label that confirmation only after the bar closes; the opening gap can qualify while this later test fails.
  • Use Market Screener for available gap and volume fields. For a custom regular-session reference, opening-bar confirmation or combined condition on a finite symbol list, give Pine Script AI Coding Agent the exact rules and verify its generated source and chart values. This does not add those conditions to the public table or provide exchange-wide, second-by-second coverage.

Gap-Up and Gap-Down Screener FAQ

What does the Gap-Up and Gap-Down Screener show?+

A gap up screener finds openings above the previous close; a gap down screener finds openings below it. This page compares signed daily gap percentages across covered symbols. The opening gap is separate from the price change since that open. This page checks that indicator across Pineify's default stocks, crypto pairs, and ETF collections so you can narrow a watchlist without opening each chart first.

How should I read the Opening Gap result?+

A positive gap means an opening above the prior close. For an example gap-up rule of at least 2%, +2.00% qualifies; +1.99% does not. Treat the daily reading as a starting point, then compare it with price structure, volume, and your own risk rules.

Can Opening Gap predict the next price move?+

No. Opening Gap is calculated from reported market data and cannot predict the next move or guarantee a profitable trade. It can help you sort a watchlist for further research.

What timeframe does the Gap-Up and Gap-Down Screener use?+

This public page shows daily data only. Each visible Opening Gap reading comes from the latest daily snapshot returned by Pineify's TradingView Alert pipeline.

Why are the shorter timeframes locked?+

The public page requests the daily timeframe only. The full Screener supports 4-hour, 2-hour, 1-hour, 30-minute, 15-minute, 5-minute, and 1-minute readings. Sign-in is required, and symbol visibility and access depend on your plan.

How often is the Opening Gap data refreshed?+

The public API caches each indicator response for up to four hours. The table shows when its current cached response was created, although the underlying daily bar may be older when a market is closed.
