What this 2025 scenario measures
The modeled gain is quantity × (disposal-day close − acquisition-day close) minus the entered transaction fees. These vendor prices do not establish your actual tax basis or proceeds. The lookup requires a valid close for each exact date; missing data stops the calculation.
How the rates are applied
For a positive gain, the calculator subtracts tax on the starting income from tax on starting income plus the gain. Federal long-term gains are stacked above the entered ordinary taxable income, allowing a gain to cross the 0%, 15% and 20% bands. This assumes no other capital gains or qualified dividends. Short-term gains use the ordinary rate schedule.
California uses the same ordinary rate schedule for short- and long-term gains. The separate 1% Behavioral Health Services Tax applies to taxable income above $1 million regardless of filing status. NIIT uses the separate MAGI input and assumes this gain is the only net investment income.
Use actual records for filing
Check acquisition and disposal timestamps, fees, lot identification, federal and California adjustments, and other gains or losses. This page covers a purchased investment held by a full-year California resident and sold in 2025. It does not calculate a complete return, loss carryovers, mining or staking income, gifted or inherited basis, collectibles treatment, or changes in residency.
The California schedule is used continuously for estimation. FTB instructs filers with taxable income of $100,000 or less to use its tax table; rounding and table intervals can produce different amounts. Federal filing worksheets can also differ from this simplified calculation.
