Zacks offers earnings research and stock screens. Separate a model rank from an estimate gap, a reported earnings surprise and a stock return before using a candidate list. These are different measurements with different dates.

Zacks documents several distinct inputs and tools:
- Zacks Rank combines four factors; it is not simply the number of analysts giving a buy recommendation.
- Earnings ESP means Expected Surprise Prediction. It compares two estimates before the earnings release.
- The Custom Screener includes earnings revisions and documented momentum criteria. Research Wizard adds separate screening and backtesting capabilities.
Match the Screen to Its Time Basis
The official FAQ describes the Custom Screener as follows:
- Price-related fields, Rank, earnings estimates, average broker recommendations and insider data update daily after the market close.
- Other data updates weekly, by Monday at 4:30 a.m. The FAQ does not specify a timezone for that cutoff. A quote elsewhere on the site may follow a different feed.
- A daily or weekly refreshed screening field is not a one-minute trigger. Recheck the current field definition and timestamp before comparing it with another platform.

An Estimate Gap Is Not a Trade Return
These hypothetical figures explain the calculations. They are not a Zacks result, a trading recommendation or a backtest.
Before the Earnings Release
Suppose the consensus is $1.00 and the Most Accurate Estimate is $1.02 for the same quarter. The estimate gap is ($1.02 / $1.00 - 1) × 100 = 2%. This positive-denominator example measures disagreement between forecasts. It is not a 2% expected stock return or a 2% probability of a beat.
After the Earnings Release
If reported EPS is $1.10 against that $1.00 consensus, the realized earnings surprise is 10%. A stock moving from $50 before the report to $47.50 afterward has a -5% price return over that chosen window. Both can be true. Guidance, prior expectations and other news can matter to the price response.
Read Performance Claims by Method
Zacks describes its Rank #1 series as a hypothetical portfolio based on lists available to clients at each rebalance, and explicitly distinguishes it from a backtest. Its disclosure excludes commissions, spread and market impact, among other limitations. Research Wizard strategy figures, in contrast, are generated through backtesting. Neither is the return of your account.
The ESP education page reports a historical beat rate for positive ESP combined with Rank #1, #2 or #3. That statistic concerns earnings versus estimates. It is not a stock-price win rate, and it does not assign a guaranteed probability to the next company. This review has not reproduced the vendor study.
For your own comparison, record the screen date, earnings period, estimate timestamp, Rank and rule definitions before looking at later prices. Manually add supported symbols to Pineify if technical context is useful. A current candidate list cannot reconstruct the information available before a past announcement.

It combines earnings-estimate revision and surprise information into ranks from #1 Strong Buy to #5 Strong Sell. Zacks names four inputs: Agreement, Magnitude, Upside and Surprise. This is a model classification, not a probability of profit or an intraday entry instruction.
Are earnings-revision filters free?
Zacks describes its Custom Screener as free and explicitly documents screening for upward estimate revisions. Its FAQ reserves screening by Zacks Rank for Premium. Do not assume that every estimate field is paid simply because the Rank filter is restricted.

Is Earnings ESP a realized earnings surprise?
No. Expected Surprise Prediction compares the Most Accurate Estimate with the consensus before the report. A realized surprise compares the reported result with the relevant estimate. Neither percentage directly measures the subsequent stock return.
