Morningstar Stock Screener: Ratings, Fair Value & Access
Morningstar's stock ratings describe valuation and business characteristics. Learn what those fields mean before screening, then keep any separate technical observations tied to their own period and data source.
Objective Evaluation
Separate the Business, the Valuation and the Price
Research Fields to Inspect
Each field answers a different research question:
- Economic Moat ratings assess the durability of competitive advantages
- Fair Value estimates and price-to-fair-value ratios compare market prices with model outputs
- Capital Allocation ratings assess management decisions; this is the updated name for Stewardship
Interpretation Boundaries
A favorable label leaves other questions unanswered:
- A wide moat does not establish that the current share price offers a discount
- A low price-to-fair-value ratio still depends on the model and its uncertainty
- A stock-star rating is not a short-term reversal signal or a substitute for checking financial assumptions

Research Workflow
Preserve the Research Assumptions When Adding a Technical View
Step 1: Record the Research Context
Choose the stock universe and relevant ratings. Add fair value, uncertainty and price-to-fair-value columns where available. Read the supporting report and note its date, assumptions and whether the rating is analyst or quantitative.
Step 2: Compare Separate Technical Observations
Add supported listings to a Pineify collection and select the technical fields and interval you need. Verify that the exchange, currency and share class match. Technical readings do not validate a valuation model or prove that a decline has ended.
A Discount Is an Estimate, Not a Return
Suppose a stock trades at $72 and a model estimates fair value at $90. Price divided by fair value is 0.80: the stock trades 20% below that estimate. A move from $72 to $90 would instead be a 25% price gain, because the denominator is $72. Neither calculation establishes that the model is correct or that the market will reach its estimate.
If new information lowers estimated fair value to $60 while price stays $72, the ratio becomes 1.20. The stock now trades 20% above the revised estimate without its price having moved. This hypothetical change explains why a screen needs the valuation date as well as the current quote.
Morningstar adjusts stock-star thresholds for uncertainty; two stocks at the same price-to-fair-value ratio need not receive the same rating. Its fund-star system answers a different question about historical risk-adjusted performance. Do not combine the two as one common valuation scale.

Frequently Asked Questions
What do Morningstar stock stars measure?
The stock rating relates market price to estimated fair value, with an adjustment for uncertainty. It is not simply a company-quality score. A business can retain a moat while its star rating changes with price or valuation assumptions.
Is Morningstar Investor free?
Access to all Morningstar ratings requires Investor. The US offer checked October 20, 2026 lists $249 annually or $34.95 monthly, with a seven-day trial subject to eligibility and terms. Public articles or limited views do not establish free access to every screener field.
Can I customize Morningstar screener columns?
Yes. The Data & Columns control lets users select, remove and reorder data points, and custom views preserve those choices. Its help center also documents AI Quick Filters. Inspect the selected filters and available fields rather than assuming a fixed results table.
Are stock and fund star ratings interchangeable?
No. Stock stars concern price relative to an uncertainty-adjusted valuation. Fund stars evaluate historical risk-adjusted performance against peers. A five-star fund is not a stock trading at a specified discount to fair value.
Can Pineify reproduce Morningstar ratings or confirm a bottom?
No. Market Screener displays supported technical readings, not Morningstar proprietary ratings or a verified bottom detector. Full data requires sign-in and Expert or higher. Add supported symbols manually to a collection; no automatic Morningstar-rule import or collection-to-Pine export is provided.
