XAUUSD technical analysis: define the feed and clock first

XAUUSD commonly labels a gold price quoted in US dollars per troy ounce, but the chart may represent a particular spot feed or broker contract. Before interpreting a level, identify that instrument, its timestamps and trading terms. A gold futures chart, an OTC spot quote and a broker CFD are not interchangeable execution records.

Separate the gold instruments

Two feeds can have different highs, session boundaries and volume fields. A chart comparison should first establish whether it is comparing the same instrument and observation window.

London benchmark times are local times

LBMA specifies Gold Price auctions at 10:30 and 15:00 London time. These correspond to 10:30/15:00 UTC in standard time and 09:30/14:00 UTC during British Summer Time. They are benchmark auctions, not a universal gold-market opening bell.

  • Use Europe/London for a London-local rule and America/New_York for a New-York-local rule. The UK and US do not always change daylight saving on the same dates.
  • A fixed UTC window is a different specification. Calling it an Asian range does not establish that most liquidity occurs there.
  • Check the actual economic-release calendar and broker schedule. A fixed overlap table does not account for holidays, shortened sessions or release-time changes.

Interpret indicators without inventing a mechanism

A moving average is a calculation from the selected prices. ATR describes a historical range measure; it does not guarantee a maximum future move. RSI and Fibonacci levels likewise require explicit settings and anchors before a rule can be evaluated.

  • Do not carry a historical $20–$50 ATR range into every gold market regime. Calculate the chosen length on the actual series.
  • If the available volume is broker tick volume, a VWAP built from it is weighted by that input. It is not an observed global institutional cost basis.
  • Overlapping Fibonacci, moving-average and horizontal levels are not three independent confirmations. Their shared price inputs can repeat the same information.
  • This page provides no live support or resistance quote and no best-timeframe or high-probability claim. Label chart levels with their observation date.

A fixed UTC range in Pine

This example uses a deliberately fixed 00:00–07:00 UTC window on standard minute charts. It starts a range only after observing a bar opening at 00:00 UTC, resets on each UTC date and retains the observed range after the window. It does not detect all missing bars or verify an exchange session calendar.

  • If loaded history starts midway through a window, the range stays missing for that day. This avoids presenting a known partial beginning as a full window.
  • Bars must be aligned to the listed minute intervals. During the window, the current high and low can change; levels are not fixed before 07:00.
  • Missing bars inside the window can still understate the range. The script plots observations from the chart feed, not guaranteed complete market activity.
  • It has no alert or order logic. A later crossing needs a separate definition of confirmation, order timing, expiry and costs.

Contract size changes the risk arithmetic

For a hypothetical $8-per-ounce entry-to-stop distance, one 100-ounce GC contract has $800 of planned price risk before costs. CME specifies a $0.10-per-ounce minimum price change for GC, worth $10 per contract. A $1,000 budget would allow one such contract by this simple distance calculation, leaving $200 before any allowance for costs.

  • For an invented broker contract of 100 ounces per lot, 0.10 lot represents 10 ounces and the same $8 distance represents $80. This is an arithmetic assumption, not a universal XAUUSD lot specification.
  • Buying power, margin, financing, spreads and worse fills are additional constraints. Planned stop distance is not a maximum loss.
  • If the account currency is not USD, state the conversion rate and timestamp. A price-unit calculation alone does not produce account-currency risk.

What a chart image can and cannot establish

For a visual review, include the symbol/provider, interval, time-zone label and visible dates. A screenshot can show a marked level or candle arrangement. It cannot reveal unshown orders, prove who traded, reconstruct missing candles or establish a strategy’s win rate.

  • Keep the image interpretation separate from an order decision. Check values against the underlying chart.
  • For a systematic test, use timestamped observations and a specified execution model rather than estimating a full history from a screenshot.
