Stock screening and chart review

Minervini trend templates on TradingView: explicit filters and gaps

The Minervini trend template narrows a stock universe using moving-average order, an established upward trend, annual price-range tests and a relative-strength rating. On TradingView, check daily price against the 50-, 150- and 200-day simple moving averages, then verify the remaining conditions separately. A moving-average crossover alone is insufficient. Pineify Market Screener supplies some useful columns, but it does not provide a complete native Minervini screen or the proprietary IBD RS Rating.

The eight-condition book baseline

The table summarizes the 2013 Trade Like a Stock Market Wizard checklist reproduced in Elearnmarkets' public book summary. McGraw Hill confirms the original book and its Trading with the Trend chapter; its public catalog is not a full rules excerpt. Let P be the completed daily close, S50/S150/S200 the daily close SMAs, and H/L the trailing 52-week high/low. All eight conditions must pass under this baseline.

  • Conditions 1, 2, 4 and 5 reduce to P > S50 > S150 > S200. That is a current ordering, not a requirement that a crossover happened today.
  • The distance rules include their exact thresholds; the average comparisons are strict. Compare unrounded values when a displayed value is near a boundary.

Original rules, author variants and personal changes

There is more than one published Minervini template. A workshop review hosted on Minervini's own site documents the 1-Month, 5-Month and 5-Month Wide versions. MarketSmith India also documents one-month and five-month rising-200-day templates. These names identify different screens; they should not be collapsed into a single undocumented preset.

  • The TradingView community script linked in the sources uses a 25% low-distance threshold and a 22-day trend window. Its publication on TradingView does not establish endorsement by Mark Minervini.
  • Pineify is an independent research workflow. This page does not offer an author-authorized product, reproduce a paid screen, or claim that a template match is a buy signal.

Define rising before you automate it

A higher S200 today than 21 trading sessions ago proves a net rise between two observations. It does not prove an upward trajectory throughout the intervening month. Review that path on the daily chart, or document an explicit algorithm and call it your implementation of the trend rule. A requirement that every daily S200 increment be positive is stricter than an endpoint comparison.

  • For a reproducible endpoint proxy, state the lookback, for example S200 today > S200 21 sessions ago. A month is not always 21 sessions; exchange holidays matter.
  • A series with S200 = 90 at the start, 96 midway and 92 now passes the endpoint proxy but has recently turned down. Do not label it a confirmed continuously rising month from those endpoints alone.
  • The longer preference needs enough history to calculate the 200-day average and inspect its preceding four or five months. An instrument with 200 daily observations has only one fully formed S200 value.

The RS Rating is a cross-sectional rank

William O'Neil + Co. describes its proprietary RS Rating as a 1-to-99 percentile comparison of price performance across its stock database over the preceding 12 months, with extra weight on the latest quarter. It therefore needs a comparison universe and a ranking method. A stock/SPY price ratio, a 12-month return, and RSI 14 each measure something different.

  • Obtain the actual rating with a source and an observation date when applying the original IBD condition. An unavailable rating is Unknown, even if every price test passes.
  • An independently calculated percentile can be useful, but label its universe, weights, history policy and date. Do not call it the proprietary IBD rating or assume the threshold produces the same candidates.
  • A rising relative-price line can supplement chart review. It cannot certify that a stock outranks 70% of the provider's universe. An RSI reading of 70 also cannot satisfy the RS Rating condition.

Five candidates, one observation policy

These fictional stocks illustrate the calculation; they are not market quotes or recommendations. Assume a completed 2026-10-16 regular-session close, USD prices, consistently split-adjusted OHLC without dividend adjustment, and complete daily histories. H/L are the highest high and lowest low in the preceding 52-calendar-week window, including the observation session. The rising-trend review covers 2026-09-16 through 2026-10-16. Each stated RS value is an assumed same-date provider rating, not a value calculated from this table.

  • Low distance = 100 × (P / L - 1). Signed high distance = 100 × (P / H - 1). The baseline requires low distance ≥ 30% and high distance ≥ -25%.
  • For A: 100 × (104 / 80 - 1) = 30%; 100 × (104 / 120 - 1) = -13.3333%. The move needed to regain H uses P as denominator: 100 × (120 / 104 - 1) = 15.3846%. These are different quantities.

Record a result and the reason it changed

For the same five candidates, a complete pass requires all eight checks. Any observed failure rejects the candidate under this baseline; otherwise a missing required observation leaves the result Unknown. This prevents a score such as seven out of eight from hiding an unavailable rating.

  • A partial review using P > S50 > S200 and the two distance limits retains A, C, D and E. Only the missing S150 and RS checks reveal why C and E cannot be labeled complete passes.
  • Passing D does not establish a suitable entry: it remains 25% below its annual high. Base structure, a proposed entry, exit planning and upcoming events require separate analysis.

What Pineify Market Screener can show today

The current Market Screener catalog supports the fields below in symbol collections. Its table provides ticker search and column sorting; it is not a general rule builder for these combined inequalities. Use the columns to inspect a shortlist, and keep the full checklist alongside it. This capability mapping was checked against the implementation on October 18, 2026.

  • SMA Trend uses 20-, 50- and 200-period alignment. It is not the required 50/150/200 ordering. Do not substitute that label for the missing comparison.
  • 252 trading bars approximate a stock-market year. They are not identical to 52 calendar weeks, and 252 hourly bars are not an annual window. The two distance fields use close relative to the highest high or lowest low over their bar window.
  • A nonempty 252-bar extreme does not by itself certify 252 valid daily observations. Verify listing age and loaded history before accepting the annual-range test.

Move the shortlist into TradingView review

Start with a defined market and security universe in TradingView Stock Screener. Use available native filters to narrow it, then save the candidate symbols and review each on a standard 1D chart. Add close-based SMAs of 50, 150 and 200, check the annual range and inspect the S200 history. A custom community indicator needs its own formula review; its name is not evidence that all original rules are implemented.

  • Save supported symbols in a Pineify collection with Close, SMA 50, SMA 200 and both 252-bar distance columns. Keep a dated checklist outside the changing snapshot with each missing field and its source.
  • Ask AI Finance Agent to locate public rule descriptions, issuer events or a published rating for a named ticker and date. Request source URLs and dates, and require Unknown where evidence is missing. Web research cannot reconstruct a licensed rating or guarantee access to historical observations.
  • A useful research request is: "For these exchange-qualified tickers and this closing date, list each template condition, its source, observation date and Pass/Fail/Unknown. Separate the book checklist from my added liquidity filter. Do not replace IBD RS Rating with RSI or a price ratio."
  • Before comparing results, match exchange, session, close time and split/dividend adjustments. TradingView can adjust charts for dividends; mixing that series with unadjusted annual extremes changes the test.
  • Treat a live bar, a stale snapshot, missing sessions, zero or negative reference prices, and insufficient history as unresolved inputs. Do not use a newer RS Rating to certify a historical screen. Preserve the original universe and dated inputs if you later assess results.
