Pine Script editor extensions: what they can check

A Pine Script extension can mean a local file suffix such as .pine or an editor add-on that supplies highlighting, completion, and diagnostics. These features help you edit source code. They do not establish that TradingView accepts the script or that its chart behavior matches your rules. Compile and run the final source in TradingView, whose current official manual documents Pine Script v6.

File extension, language version, and editor version

Saving a local copy as review.pine is useful when an extension associates .pine files with its language support. Check the language mode if the file opens as plain text. Pine selects its language version through the version annotation inside the source. Renaming a file or installing a v6-branded extension does not migrate an older script.

ItemWhat it controlsWhat to inspect
.pine suffixFile recognition in an editor that supports itThe language mode and extension file associations
Pine version annotationThe language rules requested by the sourceThe annotation and the matching official reference
Extension package versionThe installed implementation of editing supportPublisher, package identifier, and release notes

What each layer can prove

TradingView documents built-in highlighting, hover help, autocomplete, and a compile/run workflow in the Pine Editor. An external editor can be convenient for local files and diffs. Compare its specific features rather than treating every tool labeled Pine Script as the same validator.

LayerUseful evidenceStill unresolved
Syntax highlightingRecognized tokens have readable colorsWhether arguments, types, or behavior are correct
Autocomplete and snippetsA name or template is available to insertWhether it fits this call and this Pine version
Local diagnosticsThe installed checker found a rule violation, or found noneRules it does not implement and possible false positives
TradingView compilationTradingView accepts the source for compilationRuntime errors, output values, and trading assumptions
Chart executionObserved output for recorded data, inputs, and settingsUntested symbols, realtime conditions, or future results

A publisher and maintenance check you can repeat

One example is Pine Script v6 IDE Tools, with Marketplace identifier jpantsjoha.pinescript-v6-extension. Its listing names Jaroslav Pantsjoha and explicitly describes the project as unofficial. On October 17, 2026, its linked GitHub releases page marked v0.7.1 as Latest. That is a dated release-history observation, not a recommendation or a promise of continued maintenance.

  • The publisher describes .pine recognition, completion, hover help, and local checks. Those descriptions are not independent tests of their accuracy.
  • Match the Marketplace identifier with the repository and installed package. Similar display names can refer to different publishers.
  • Check release notes for the Pine versions you use and inspect unresolved issues that affect your code. A recent release alone does not prove compatibility.
  • Record the installed version when reproducing an error. The version available online may differ from the one running in your editor.

Check access before installing an extension

Microsoft documents that the VS Code extension host has the same permissions as VS Code. Extensions can read or write files, make network requests, and run external processes. A small feature description, such as syntax highlighting, is not a technical restriction on an extension that executes code.

  • Read the publisher, repository, dependencies, and data-handling documentation before opening private strategy files with an unfamiliar extension.
  • A verified publisher badge is a publisher/domain trust signal. It is not proof that every release is secure or that diagnostics are correct.
  • If a tool requests a TradingView login, cookie, or cloud upload, inspect why that access is required and where the data goes. File coloring alone does not explain such a request.
  • This page checks public documentation and release metadata. It does not audit or certify an extension package.

Worked review: one file, five separate observations

Assume you already have a Pine v6 indicator saved as review.pine and want to evaluate a local extension. Use a disposable copy and keep a source revision or hash for the final file. This is a proposed acceptance exercise, not a report that an extension was installed or these outcomes were observed.

  • Use the same restored source for both diagnostic results. Comparing two revisions can create a false disagreement.
  • Pine executes across chart bars; an indicator can recalculate while the current bar is open. Include that case when checking changing signals.
  • If chart execution has not been performed, mark behavior untested. Do not convert an empty Problems panel into a runtime pass.

Resolve conflicting diagnostics with the source attached

When the extension and TradingView disagree, retain the smallest complete script that reproduces the issue, its Pine version, the extension identifier/version, and both messages. Check the official function signature before accepting a quick fix. If TradingView compiles but the result is wrong, investigate the intended calculation and execution timing rather than changing syntax at random.

  • For a missing completion, inspect the local language mode and supported reference version.
  • For a compiler error, compare the exact line and its surrounding scope in the same source revision.
  • For a behavior error, provide the symbol, timeframe, inputs, expected output, and observed output.
  • The Pine Script AI Coding Agent can help explain the source and revise a failing section. Review the proposed change and validate its chart behavior in TradingView.
