Building a Strategy with MACD

MACD measures the difference between a faster and a slower moving average. Its signal line smooths that difference, and the histogram is MACD minus the signal line. The familiar 12/26/9 EMA configuration is one baseline; TradingView exposes averaging-type choices, so verify the actual script rather than assuming every MACD has identical smoothing.

Three events must be kept distinct: MACD crossing its signal, MACD crossing zero, and the histogram crossing zero. A signal-line crossover corresponds to a histogram zero crossing for the same calculation. It is not the same as MACD crossing its own zero line. Define which event opens a trade and whether the opposite event exits or reverses a position.

An entry threshold needs both a measured quantity and units. Standard MACD values use price units, not a universal 0–100 scale. A threshold of 3 has a different meaning on EURUSD and on a high-priced crypto pair. Specify whether a filter applies to the MACD line, histogram, absolute magnitude, or a separately normalized series. A zero threshold can still impose a sign condition; it does not necessarily mean every crossover is accepted.

Optimization Example and Test Design

Hypothetical first search: 3 fast lengths × 3 slow lengths × 3 signal lengths × 2 filter states = 54 configurations. All fast lengths are below every slow length and the 12/26/9 baseline is included. The filter must already be implemented as an exposed strategy input. As a calculation check, fast MA 105 and slow MA 100 give MACD 5; with a signal value of 4, the histogram is 1. These are price-unit values, not percentages. Inspect the selected entry event on the chart, hold costs and exits fixed, and retain the unfiltered baseline. An alternative coarse grid of fast 5–30 by 5 and slow 15–50 by 5 has 48 raw pairs but only 38 satisfy fast < slow. Pineify’s Cartesian search does not by itself establish that every requested pair is a meaningful strategy configuration.
