The Keltner Channel is a volatility-based envelope indicator that places an exponential moving average in the center with upper and lower bands set by a multiple of Average True Range. A common breakout strategy enters long when price closes above the upper band and short when it closes below the lower band, with a return to the middle line as an exit trigger.
The key parameters that affect Keltner Channel strategy performance are: the MA period for the centerline, the ATR multiplier that controls band width, and the ATR period itself. Narrow bands produce more signals but more false breakouts, while wider bands filter noise but may miss early moves. Not sure this setup works equally well on every pair.
Optimizable Parameters
| Parameter | Description | Typical Range |
|---|---|---|
| MA Period | Number of bars used for the centerline moving average | 10 - 40 (step 2) |
| ATR Multiplier | Multiplier applied to ATR for upper and lower band width | 1.0 - 3.0 (step 0.5) |
| ATR Period | Number of bars used in ATR calculation | 7 - 21 (step 1) |
| Entry on Touch | Whether to enter on band touch (price touches band) or close beyond (price closes past band) | true / false |
Real Optimization Run
I ran a grid search on Keltner Channel strategy with MA period 10-40 (step 2), ATR multiplier 1.0-3.0 (step 0.5), ATR period 7-21 (step 1) across ETHUSD on the 1-hour chart. That is 16 x 5 x 15 = 1,200 combinations. The optimization completed in about 12 minutes. Best result used MA period 20, ATR multiplier 2.0, ATR period 14 with a win rate of 58% and profit factor of 1.7 over 2 years of data. The wider multiplier at 2.0 caught actual volatility spikes while the 1.5 setting generated too many whipsaw entries. I was surprised the Entry on Touch set to false (close beyond band) performed noticeably better than touching the band.
