What is price and volume analysis (VPA)?
Price tells you where the market moved, while volume reveals how much capital drove that movement. Standard candlestick analysis shows open, high, low, and close prices, but without volume, a trader cannot tell whether a wide green bar represents institutional buying or thin liquidity. Price and volume analysis combines candle range (spread) with relative volume to uncover market intent.
| Price spread | Volume level | Market dynamic | Strategic implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wide spread up | High volume | Effort matches result; strong institutional buying | Confirms bullish breakout continuation |
| Narrow spread up | Ultra-high volume | High effort with poor result; heavy selling absorption | Signals potential distribution or topping phase |
| Wide spread up | Low volume | Lack of liquidity; no institutional participation | High risk of false breakout (bull trap) |
| Wide spread down | High volume | Effort matches result; active institutional liquidation | Confirms bearish breakdown continuation |
| Narrow spread down | Ultra-high volume | Selling absorbed by large buyers at support | Signals potential accumulation or bottoming phase |
