Small cap stock screener

Build a small and micro-cap candidate list by checking market cap, float, dollar liquidity, bid-ask spread and dilution evidence together. The editable worksheet below explains every inclusion and exclusion before you review a chart.

The starting companies are synthetic examples, not stock recommendations. A screen narrows research; it does not establish investment quality or guarantee an executable trade.

Small and micro-cap screening worksheet

Three synthetic companies demonstrate the rules. Replace their inputs with your own research; this worksheet does not fetch stock fundamentals or quotes. Edits stay in this tab until reload. Export candidates to keep a copy.

Page convention: micro cap is greater than $0 and below $300m; small cap is $300m to below $2bn. Minimums are inclusive; the spread maximum is inclusive. These are editable research rules, not recommended trade sizes.

Company A
Company B
Company C

Leave an unknown value blank. Use the same market date for price, shares, float and bid/ask; turnover covers the 20 completed sessions ending on that date. The filing date is the date the evidence became public, not its fiscal period end. Refresh stale inputs before using a candidate.

1 of 3 companies pass the worksheet rules
CompanyMarket cap (USD m)GroupSpreadResultReason
Alder (synthetic)600Small cap0.333%CandidateAll entered checks pass; research candidate only
Birch (synthetic)180Micro cap5.000%ExcludedFloat below minimum; Turnover below minimum; Spread above maximum; Dilution event flagged
Cedar (synthetic)450Small capUnknownNeeds dataFloat missing/invalid; Turnover missing/invalid; Bid/ask missing/invalid; Filing evidence unavailable by screening date

A known rule failure is Excluded even when other data is missing. With no known failure, missing or invalid data is Needs data. Later publication dates cannot qualify a historical candidate. This day-level check is not an archived intraday backtest.

Use one set of market-cap bands

The worksheet uses USD equity value: share price × total shares outstanding. Enter ordinary shares and matching prices; mixing an ADR price with the underlying ordinary share count gives the wrong result. Float is entered separately. TradingView explains its market-capitalization calculation and depositary-receipt treatment.

Micro cap has no single cutoff: Investor.gov describes values below $250 million or $300 million as common usage. This page fixes the split at $300 million, with small cap ending below $2 billion, so no row belongs to both groups. These bands are research conventions and do not reproduce any index's eligibility method. See the Investor.gov definition.

Reproduce the three starting results

Alder has a $12 price and 50 million shares, giving $600 million of equity value. Its 35 million float and $4.8 million average daily turnover exceed the default minimums. Its spread is ($12.02 − $11.98) ÷ $12 midpoint × 100 = 0.333%. With a completed filing review and dates before October 16, 2026, it is a Candidate.

Birch has $2 × 90 million = $180 million of equity value, so it is micro cap. Its 6 million float, $0.2 million turnover and 5% spread fail the default liquidity rules; its flagged offering also excludes it. Cedar has a $450 million market cap, but missing float, quotes and filing review make it Needs data. Replacing blanks with zero would change the meaning of the evidence.

Check the inputs that a ranking cannot answer

Float and dollar liquidity

Use a float source with an observation date and definition. Restricted or insider shares can make public float much smaller than total shares. Enter average daily dollar turnover as the sum of each session's traded dollar value divided by 20 completed sessions. Price × average share volume is only a proxy when daily prices vary; identify it as such in your note. A one-day volume spike can hide a thin normal market.

Spread and execution

Spread percent is (ask − bid) ÷ ((ask + bid) / 2) × 100. Use simultaneous, positive quotes with ask at least bid. Blank, crossed or zero quotes need investigation. A quoted spread does not establish depth or the price available for your order size; it can widen outside regular hours or around news.

Dilution events and share counts

Read offering documents and subsequent filings for completed issuance, active at-the-market programs, convertible debt and warrants. A shelf registration or proposed offering is potential capacity, not proof that every registered share was sold. Record what happened and the public filing date. Keep stock splits separate from new capital issuance and align adjusted prices with share counts.

Public availability and stale inputs

A quarter-end balance sheet may only become public weeks later. Use its filing or release date when deciding what was knowable. The worksheet checks dates, not source authenticity or freshness. It cannot recover a missing historical universe, identify all delistings or detect undisclosed financing. The SEC describes limited information and liquidity risks in its microcap risk bulletin.

Danelfin small-cap ranking preview

This separate provider list retains its own ranking and universe. It does not use the worksheet filters. The endpoint supplies scores, price and quarterly performance, but no market cap, float, turnover, bid/ask or dilution evidence.

Provider dataset date unavailable. No intraday quote or fixed refresh delay is promised. A Low Risk score does not measure your order liquidity or rule out loss.

Tickers and company names are masked by the public endpoint. Revealing these identities in the app requires Pineify Advanced access or higher; a free account alone does not reveal them.

Move candidates into chart review

  1. Export worksheet candidates with their screening rules and dates. In TradingView, verify the exchange and share class before opening each symbol. Its screener filter guide explains how to add and adjust filters; match the displayed currency and field units rather than copying a number alone.
  2. Inspect chart gaps, volume concentration, recent reverse splits and the active trading session. Check current broker quotes and order-book depth separately. A technical setup does not repair stale float data or a financing risk.
  3. Use Pineify's Market Screener to compare supported technical fields such as Close / EMA 20 and relative volume across a saved symbol collection. Those signals help with chart follow-up. This worksheet's market cap, float, spread and dilution rules are not native Market Screener filters.
  4. Ask the AI Finance Agent to locate and explain public company filings for missing evidence. Specify the ticker, filing date and question, such as whether a disclosed offering was proposed or completed. Open the cited primary document yourself; the agent may lack a document or misinterpret its terms.

For US issuers, start source verification in SEC EDGAR. Tool documentation and educational sources checked October 18, 2026. Research use only; no investment recommendation.

Small-cap screening questions

This worksheet defines micro cap as above $0 and below $300 million, and small cap as $300 million to below $2 billion. These non-overlapping USD bands are a page convention, not universal index eligibility rules. A company at exactly $300 million is small cap; one at $2 billion is outside this screen.

No. Market cap uses price multiplied by shares outstanding. A $2 share with 90 million shares outstanding has a $180 million market cap. Float is a separate count of shares available for public trading; it does not replace total shares outstanding in this calculation.

Missing or invalid inputs cannot pass a rule. Needs data means no known rule has failed but at least one required input or public date is missing. A known failure takes precedence and produces Excluded, with missing fields still listed in the reasons.

No. Reviewed: no event found records the scope of your review. It does not prove that new shares cannot be issued. Check offerings, active at-the-market programs, convertible securities, warrants and share-count changes in issuer filings. Unknown reviews remain Needs data even if flagged-event exclusion is disabled.

The Danelfin preview is a separate cached ranking. It does not expose market cap, float, dollar turnover, bid/ask quotes or dilution evidence through this endpoint, and it does not apply the worksheet rules. Its dataset date is shown when supplied. Public ticker and company fields stay masked; revealing identities in the app requires Pineify Advanced access or higher.

No. The date check prevents a row from qualifying with inputs dated after the selected screening day, but the worksheet has no historical universe or archived filings. It does not model delistings, quote timestamps, transaction costs or executions. Use contemporaneous records before testing a historical hypothesis.
