Straddle & Strangle Option Calculator
Visualize your options strategy. Calculate potential profit, loss, and breakeven points at expiration from your manual strikes and premiums. Assumes 100 shares per contract and equal quantities in both legs; excludes transaction and financing costs.
Expiration payoff only. Short positions can require substantial margin and can be assigned early. The chart’s right edge is not a maximum loss or profit boundary.
What is a Strangle?
A Strangle is an options strategy that involves holding a position in both a call and a put with different strike prices but with the same expiration date and underlying asset.
- Long Strangle: You buy an out-of-the-money call and an out-of-the-money put. At expiration, profit requires intrinsic value exceeding the combined premium.
- Short Strangle: You sell an out-of-the-money call and an out-of-the-money put. It profits when the stock price finishes between the strikes, keeping the combined premium before costs. Short-call losses are uncapped if the stock rises sufficiently.
What is a Straddle?
A Straddle is similar to a strangle but involves buying (or selling) a call and a put with the same strike price and expiration date.
- Long Straddle: At expiration, the stock must move beyond strike plus or minus combined premium to profit. A straddle often costs more than an out-of-the-money strangle, but premium alone does not establish which requires the larger price move; compare both actual breakevens.
- Short Straddle: Has its maximum expiration profit at the common strike and earns a profit between its feasible breakevens before costs. Losses above the upper breakeven are uncapped.
How to Use This Calculator
- Select Strategy: Choose between Long/Short Strangle or Straddle.
- Enter Market Data: Input the current Stock Price as a chart reference; it does not set expiration payoff.
- Option Details: Enter the Strike Price and Premium for both Call and Put options. (For Straddles, Put Strike is automatically synced).
- Contracts: Specify the number of contracts per leg. The multiplier is fixed at 100; adjusted contracts with different deliverables are outside this model.
- Analyze: Instantly view your Max Profit, Max Loss, Breakeven points, and Risk/Reward chart.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the calculator assume?
Equal numbers of standard 100-share call and put contracts on the same nonnegative-priced underlying with the same expiration. Premiums are per share. It models intrinsic payoff at expiration, excluding fees, financing, margin requirements, taxes, early assignment, and exercise or settlement details.
How are the breakevens calculated?
Upper breakeven is call strike plus both per-share premiums. Lower breakeven is put strike minus both premiums. A negative lower result is outside the nonnegative stock-price domain and is shown as None at S ≥ 0. Straddles use the same strike for both legs.
Is the profit or loss unlimited in both directions?
No. For long combinations, the call gives uncapped theoretical upside profit while downside profit is bounded by the stock reaching zero. Short combinations have uncapped upside loss from the short call; their downside loss is large but bounded at zero. The finite chart does not cap those risks.
Does it estimate value before expiration or automate trades?
No. The tool accepts manual premiums and draws expiration payoff. It does not estimate option time value, implied volatility, profit probabilities, or execution. Pine Script strategy drafts do not automatically execute a multi-leg option position.
Why Use a Calculator?
Calculating breakeven points and visualizing the profit/loss zones for multi-leg strategies like Straddles and Strangles can be complex. This tool simplifies the math, allowing you to focus on your market analysis and volatility expectations.
