Expiration Payoff Scenarios

Free Options Tax Efficiency Analyzer

Compare expiration P&L for supported option presets under your own short-term, long-term or 60/40 tax-rate assumptions. This educational overlay does not establish tax eligibility or prepare a tax return.

User-Selected Tax Assumptions
Optional Cached Snapshot
100% Free

Illustrative expiration payoff with a user-selected tax overlay on positive combined P&L. This does not determine tax eligibility, allocate taxes by leg, calculate loss offsets, or model assignment, fees, wash sales, straddles, annual mark-to-market or NIIT thresholds. All option legs use 100-share multipliers and one expiration. Preset premiums are fictional assumptions.

Changing the reference price or preset resets the legs to example values.

Strategy Legs

Select a scenario assumption; neither the preset nor ticker establishes legal eligibility. Rates are illustrative user inputs, not inferred brackets.

Optional flat surcharge assumption. The actual NIIT lesser-of/MAGI threshold calculation is not modeled; default 0%.

What is an Options Strategy Tax Efficiency Analyzer?

Use this calculator to compare a configured expiration payoff before and after a chosen tax-rate overlay. It applies federal, state and optional surcharge rates only when combined payoff is positive. It does not classify actual transactions, file a return or rank strategies by expected returns.

Why Use This Tax Efficiency Analyzer?

Section 1256 vs Equity Options

Switch between all short-term, all long-term and a 60/40 split to isolate the effect of assumed rates. The selection is independent of the strategy preset and does not verify contract eligibility.

Multi-Scenario Analysis

Seven underlying-price outcomes range from a 20% fall to a 20% rise. The chart samples a wider price range. Neither the table nor chart assigns probabilities or reports an expected return.

Customizable Tax Rates

Enter your assumed rates. The tool uses flat percentages, without income brackets, MAGI thresholds, deductions or state-specific rules. An unused filing-status selector is not needed for this model.

Optional Snapshot Inputs

Load an optional cached snapshot page, then choose contracts by full symbol and expiration. Only standard 100-share contracts are supported. Closing and last-trade values are reference inputs, not executable prices.

How to Use This Options Tax Efficiency Analyzer

  1. 1

    Fetch Snapshot (Optional)

Enter a supported underlying ticker and click Fetch Snapshot. At most 250 contracts are returned in one page. If no usable data is available, continue with manual prices; do not interpret absence as zero premium.

  2. 2

    Select a Strategy

Choose a preset, inspect its example legs, and replace strikes, quantities and premiums. The two index examples reuse the same payoff structures; they do not automatically receive different tax treatment.

  3. 3

    Configure Tax Settings

Select an explicit tax-treatment assumption and rates. Selecting a long-term scenario does not make written-option income or stock-and-option combinations eligible for that classification.

  4. 4

    Analyze Results

Read the seven scenario rows and chart under identical assumptions. The highest sampled payoff is not a global maximum. Negative combined payoff is unchanged because the tool does not calculate tax benefits from losses.

Check Actual Transaction Treatment

Actual tax treatment depends on the instrument and transaction. IRS Publication 550 describes holders, writers, exercise and Section 1256 rules; this model does not implement them. For individuals, actual NIIT uses a lesser-of calculation with MAGI thresholds, rather than charging every positive trade at 3.8%.

Primary references: IRS Publication 550 and IRS NIIT Topic 559. For a covered call, option and stock tax events may differ; this combined-payoff illustration is not a leg-by-leg tax calculation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What the tax assumptions and payoff model include.

    • Does selecting a strategy determine its tax treatment?

No. Choose the tax treatment assumption separately. A preset name or ticker does not verify Section 1256 eligibility, holding periods or the treatment of individual legs.

    • Are all equity option gains classified by holding period?

No. Holders and writers have different rules. Expiration, closing transactions and exercise can change recognition and basis; stock and option legs may differ. This tool applies one assumed classification to positive combined payoff instead of calculating those rules.

    • What does the 60/40 setting calculate?

It applies 60% of positive modeled gain to your long-term rate and 40% to your short-term rate. It does not model annual mark-to-market, netting, carrybacks or mixed straddles. Determine contract eligibility separately using IRS guidance.

    • Does the NIIT input determine whether I owe NIIT?

No. It adds the entered flat percentage to positive modeled gain. Actual individual NIIT is 3.8% of the lesser of net investment income or excess MAGI over the applicable threshold. This tool does not collect those inputs; the surcharge defaults to zero.

    • What happens to a losing scenario?

The displayed loss receives no tax credit or offset. Loss netting, deductions and carryovers are not calculated. Payoffs also omit commissions, financing, dividends and early exercise or assignment.

    • Are the option premiums live quotes?

No. Optional data uses a cached snapshot page of up to 250 contracts, with no pagination. Closing or last-trade prices may be stale or missing. Preset premiums are examples; verify executable prices and use one expiration with standard 100-share contracts.
