Options Assignment Risk Estimator
Review current option time value, dividend inputs and financing considerations for a short option. These inputs cannot establish an assignment probability or tell a holder when to exercise.
Intrinsic value per share: max(stock − strike, 0) for a call; max(strike − stock, 0) for a put. Enter 0 if ATM or OTM.
Use a current quote, not the original trade premium. Verify its timestamp and spread.
Calendar days until option expiration
Expected dividend per share before expiration (0 if none)
Annual rate for context only. No financing amount or interest benefit is calculated because strike proceeds and exercise timing are absent.
Values are per share. This tool does not fetch quotes, determine an exercise boundary or evaluate your broker account.
Time value per share
$0.50
Current premium − intrinsic value. Market spreads and stale inputs can affect this comparison.
Dividend minus time value
$0.00 per share
A positive difference is a comparison to investigate, not net exercise benefit or a probability. Verify the ex-dividend date, financing and contract terms.
Before Drawing a Conclusion
- 14 calendar days remain; American-style options can be exercised before expiration.
- Positive intrinsic value does not reveal remaining time value without the quote.
- Entered annual rate: 5%. Financing depends on actual cash amounts and timing; this rate is not converted into an assignment score.
What Assignment Risk Means
A short option can create an obligation when an exercise notice is allocated to the account. The possibility matters even when a calculator cannot supply a reliable percentage. This page uses observable premium and intrinsic value instead of inventing time value from a fixed fraction of ITM dollars.
How to Review Your Inputs
- Choose the short option type and calculate its current intrinsic value.
- Enter a current premium from the same market observation, not the entry price.
- Enter whole calendar days and, for calls, the relevant dividend per share.
- Read premium minus intrinsic value. For calls, the dividend comparison is only one input; check the actual ex-dividend timing separately.
- Check financing and broker rules. The annual rate field provides context, not a computed exercise incentive.
Calls: Dividend and Time Value
A holder may consider exercising an American-style call before an ex-dividend date. Exercising also gives up remaining optionality and requires paying the strike earlier. Dividend minus time value is therefore not a complete net-benefit calculation. This page does not model financing or optimal exercise.
Puts: Receiving Cash Earlier
A put exercise can deliver strike proceeds sooner. A financing calculation would need the relevant cash balance and timing; applying interest to ITM dollars alone is insufficient. No interest-arbitrage percentage is displayed.
Why Fixed ITM Thresholds Do Not Work
A $5 intrinsic value means something different for underlyings at different prices and volatilities. Neither $5 nor $10 ITM establishes a universal assignment probability. A short DTE is also not proof that remaining time value is negligible.
Review Obligations Before Expiration
Confirm exercise style, settlement method, deliverable, buying power, broker deadlines and allocation rules. A closing trade must execute; a roll opens a new obligation and need not collect a credit. This tool does not place either trade.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this estimator give a probability of assignment?
No. ITM dollars, days remaining, dividends and interest rates cannot establish a calibrated probability. The page computes premium minus intrinsic value and, for calls, compares that time value with a dividend input. These are review inputs, not an exercise rule or probability model.
Why use the current option premium?
Time value is current premium minus intrinsic value. It cannot be inferred from ITM dollars and days alone. Use synchronized market inputs and check bid-ask spreads. A premium below intrinsic value may indicate stale or inconsistent inputs; this tool asks you to verify them instead of treating the difference as reliable.
Does a dividend larger than time value guarantee call assignment?
No. It highlights a comparison to investigate near the relevant ex-dividend date. Exercise style, financing, remaining optionality, taxes, transaction costs and holder decisions also matter. This tool does not calculate an optimal exercise boundary.
What matters for short puts?
Receiving strike proceeds earlier can change a put holder’s financing incentive. The relevant cash amount and timing cannot be inferred from the ITM amount alone. Remaining time value, rates, dividends and contract terms all require review; the page does not estimate interest earned or assignment odds.
Can a current OTM option be assigned?
American-style holders can elect to exercise even when the option is out of the money. Current moneyness and a zero dividend input are not safety guarantees. Verify the contract’s settlement method, deliverable and your broker’s exercise and allocation instructions.
What does rolling a short option do?
A roll closes one position and opens another if the trades execute. It may cost money or receive a credit and leaves a new assignment obligation. This calculator does not recommend rolling, place orders, or check account buying power.
