Options Assignment Probability & Risk Checklist
Check the factors affecting a short option and its delta exposure. Delta and days remaining do not provide a calibrated assignment probability; this tool does not display one.
Enter delta as decimal (0.00 to 1.00). Use absolute value.
Number of calendar days until option expiration
Delta sensitivity:
Short call: −|Delta| × 100; short put: +|Delta| × 100
One-contract delta exposure
−$65.00
Approximate position P&L change for a $1 rise in the underlying, holding other factors fixed. Assumes one 100-share contract; it is not an assignment probability.
Assignment considerations
- ITM status is a reason to review exercise and settlement instructions; it does not determine a probability.
- 14 calendar days remain. An American-style short option can be assigned before expiration.
- No ex-dividend event was selected. This does not remove other exercise or assignment risks.
- Verify exercise style, actual deliverable, settlement method and your broker's allocation process. No quotes or broker positions are fetched.
Why This Tool Does Not Display an Assignment Percentage
Adding an arbitrary early-exercise adjustment to delta would imply a probability the inputs cannot establish. An expiry ITM model probability is also different from allocation of an exercise notice to a particular short account.
The delta output describes a local price response only. The checklist identifies information to verify with the broker; it is neither a trade recommendation nor a guarantee that assignment will or will not occur.
Using the Checklist
- Enter the magnitude of the quoted option delta, not a position delta already multiplied by contracts.
- Enter calendar days remaining and choose short call or short put.
- Mark current ITM status and any relevant ex-dividend date. Verify these against current contract information.
- Review time value, financing incentives, settlement and exercise deadlines separately; those are not calculated here.
Assignment Mechanics
American-style holders can exercise before expiration. Giving up remaining time value can make early exercise unattractive, while dividends and financing can change the incentive. European-style exercise restrictions differ.
Exercise notices first reach clearing members and are then allocated to customer accounts under the broker's approved method. The identity or intent of the person who originally traded with you does not determine your assignment. Consult the actual contract terms and broker instructions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can delta and DTE calculate assignment probability?
No calibrated assignment probability is produced here. Delta measures local premium sensitivity, while assignment depends on exercise decisions, contract rules and allocation. A delta of 0.65 is not a measured 65% probability that your short position will be assigned.
What does the output show?
It shows the approximate dollar exposure to a $1 underlying move for one short, standard 100-share contract, plus a checklist based on the selected moneyness, days remaining and ex-dividend event. It does not rank the position as safe or predict an exercise date.
Can an out-of-the-money option be assigned?
Yes. Holders can elect to exercise American-style options even when out of the money. Market moves and broker instructions matter; a current OTM label does not guarantee that a short contract will expire unassigned.
How are exercise notices allocated?
OCC allocates notices to clearing members using a random procedure. The broker then uses an approved allocation method, which may be random or first-in-first-out. Check your broker’s method and deadlines.
What should I check before expiration?
Check exercise style, settlement method, actual deliverable, remaining time value, ex-dividend details, buying power and your broker’s deadlines. Standard equity options commonly represent 100 shares, but adjusted contracts and cash-settled products differ. Closing or rolling requires an executed trade and can incur costs; rolling leaves a new short-option obligation.
