All cash figures are in USD, the quote currency. No account-currency conversion or live quotes are supplied. Set the extra spread allowance to zero when using actual bid/ask fills.
Calculate a trade in its quote currency
- Select the currency pair and direction. The first currency is the base unit you buy or sell; the second currency prices it.
- Enter positive entry and exit prices, choose the lot convention, and enter the lot count. The tool uses 0.01 per pip for the listed JPY quotes and 0.0001 for the other listed pairs.
- Enter only costs missing from those prices. Commission is the total for the position across both sides, in quote currency. Results update as you change any input.
Formula and reproducible checks
Base units = units per lot × lots. Long gross P&L = base units × (exit − entry); reverse the difference for a short. Signed pips = signed price change ÷ pip size. Position pip value = base units × pip size, in quote currency.
For one standard EUR/USD lot, 1.0850 to 1.0920 is 70 pips × USD 10 = USD 700 gross. If these are reference prices that exclude a 1.5-pip spread allowance, subtract USD 15 to get USD 685 before any other costs. The same upward move loses USD 700 gross for a short.
For one standard USD/JPY lot, 150.00 to 150.20 is 20 pips × JPY 1,000 = JPY 20,000 gross on a long. It is not USD 20,000. To estimate an account-currency result, convert with the applicable broker conversion rate and fees separately.
Avoid counting execution costs twice
A long normally opens at an ask and closes at a bid; a short opens at a bid and closes at an ask. When both inputs are actual fills, their difference already reflects spread crossing. Set the extra spread input to zero unless it represents another cost absent from those fills. Slippage already reflected in a fill must not be deducted again.
Financing or swap, taxes and currency conversion are outside this calculator. A zero price move with positive costs gives a loss. Increasing leverage does not change the fixed-position price P&L, but changes funding and liquidation constraints; neither is modeled here.
Sources and scope
OANDA profit and loss examples describe executable bid/ask prices and account-currency conversion. Its pip explanation covers quote increments. Check your own instrument specification and statement; these arithmetic scenarios do not predict returns or guarantee a stop fill.
FAQs
How is forex profit calculated?
For a long trade, quote-currency gross P&L equals base units times exit minus entry price. Reverse the price difference for a short. Equivalently, multiply signed pips by the position pip value; do not divide by pip size a second time.
Which currency do the results use?
Every cash result uses the second, or quote, currency of the selected pair: USD for EUR/USD, JPY for USD/JPY and GBP for EUR/GBP. The tool does not fetch conversion rates or convert to your account currency.
What are standard, mini and micro lots?
This calculator uses 100,000, 10,000 and 1,000 base-currency units respectively. Multiply that size by your lot count. Confirm the contract specification with your broker; not every platform uses lot-based sizing.
Should I deduct the spread from actual fills?
If entry and exit are actual executable bid/ask fills, their difference already includes spread crossing: set the extra spread allowance to zero. Use a separate allowance only for costs absent from the reference prices. Enter total commission for both sides in quote currency.
What does this estimate exclude?
It excludes financing or swap, taxes, account-currency conversion, unentered slippage and other charges. It does not calculate margin, liquidation or return on account equity. A positive scenario is not a forecast.
