How to Use the Crypto Break Even Calculator

  1. Average buy price: Enter the price per coin you paid on average (e.g., USD per Bitcoin or per token).
  2. Quantity: Enter how many coins or tokens you hold.
  3. Buy / sell fees: Optionally add any fees paid when buying or selling as total USD amounts, not percentages. Do not add a buy fee again if it is already in your average price.
  4. Results: You get your break-even sell price per coin and how much the price must rise from your average buy to break even.

What Is Break-Even Price in Crypto?

Break-even price is the price per coin at which selling your entire position would exactly recover your total cost—including what you paid for the coins and any buy/sell fees. Selling above that price means profit; below it means loss. Knowing this helps you set realistic targets and manage risk, especially for Bitcoin and other volatile assets.

Why Include Fees?

Exchange and network fees reduce your effective proceeds. If you ignore them, you might think you are at break-even when you are still slightly underwater. Including both buy and sell fees gives a break-even estimate for the entered fixed costs. Percentage fees and execution slippage require separate treatment.

For example, 0.5 coins at $50,000 with a $25 buy fee and $25 fixed sale fee require ($25,000 + $25 + $25) / 0.5 = $50,100 per coin, a 0.2% rise. The default numbers are illustrative; no market prices are fetched.

FAQs

What does this break-even price mean?

It is the price that recovers the entered purchase cost and fixed USD buy/sell fees when the entire entered quantity is sold. It excludes taxes, slippage and costs you have not entered.

What formula is used?

Break-even price = (average buy price × quantity + buy fee + sell fee) / quantity. Enter an average price excluding separately entered buy fees to avoid double counting.

Can I enter a percentage selling fee?

The fee fields accept fixed total USD amounts, not percentages. A fee that depends on the selling price needs a different equation: (purchase cost + fixed fees) / (quantity × (1 − percentage fee / 100)). A percentage below 100% is required.

What quantity should I enter?

Use the actual quantity available for the modeled sale, in the same asset units as the per-unit buy price. If fees reduced your coin balance, reconcile those units first. The tool does not model transfers, staking rewards or tax basis adjustments.
