Model a Fixed-Rate CD Before Comparing Offers
A certificate of deposit holds money for an agreed term. This calculator models a constant rate and reinvested interest. The bank contract determines the actual rate, crediting dates, withdrawal restrictions, and maturity proceeds. A longer term or larger deposit does not necessarily receive a higher rate.
Enter a Nominal Rate or Convert an APY
APY includes compounding. When only an APY is quoted, choose Annually and enter that percentage to model the effective annual yield. For other frequencies, use the annual nominal rate from the account terms. For example, a 5% nominal rate compounded monthly has an effective annual yield of about 5.1162%, whereas a quoted 5% APY already includes compounding.
The CFPB APY calculation rules use the interest, principal, and days in the term. This calculator uses years plus months divided by 12, so it does not reproduce a bank's exact calendar-day or rounding convention.
Formula and a Reproducible Example
For deposit P, annual nominal rate r as a decimal, n compounding periods per year, and term t in years, the balance is P × (1 + r/n)^(n × t). Continuous compounding uses P × exp(r × t). Monthly rows distribute the equivalent growth across months, including fractional compounding periods; they are estimates, not deposit statements.
A hypothetical $10,000 deposit at 5% compounded annually for three years reaches $11,576.25, with $1,576.25 interest. At an assumed 20% tax rate, the calculator subtracts $315.25 and shows $11,261.00 after tax. Annual tax payments taken out of the account would instead reduce later compounding, which this model does not simulate.
Insurance, Taxes, and Access to Your Deposit
At an FDIC-insured bank, the standard insurance limit is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category. CDs and other deposits in the same category are combined for this limit. Check the FDIC coverage rules against all your deposits; a calculator balance does not establish coverage.
The IRS interest-income guidance includes CD interest among taxable interest and explains reporting, including original issue discount. Timing and account treatment vary. The optional tax field is a simple scenario assumption, not a tax return calculation.
Early withdrawal terms vary by account. This tool does not subtract penalties or model selling a brokered CD before maturity. Compare the actual contract, available cash needs, and maturity date alongside the projected balance.
Comparing a CD Ladder
A hypothetical $15,000 ladder could place $5,000 into each of one-, two-, and three-year CDs. Run each deposit separately with its own quoted rate. The staggered maturity dates provide planned access to portions of the money; rates available for reinvestment may be higher or lower. This calculator does not automatically roll maturing deposits into new CDs.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does this CD calculator estimate?
It models one initial deposit at a constant annual nominal interest rate, with all interest reinvested until maturity. It does not retrieve bank offers or model withdrawals, rate changes, fees, or early-withdrawal penalties.
How should I enter an advertised APY?
Choose Annually and enter the APY as the annual rate to model that effective annual yield. If you choose another compounding frequency, enter the corresponding nominal rate instead; entering an APY as a monthly-compounded nominal rate counts compounding twice.
Does more frequent compounding always earn more?
It increases the modeled balance when the same positive nominal rate is held fixed. Two accounts with the same APY already have the same effective annual yield under the stated assumptions, regardless of their compounding labels.
Are all CD deposits fully insured?
CDs at FDIC-insured banks qualify for deposit insurance subject to coverage limits and ownership rules. The standard limit is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category; other deposits in the same category at that bank count toward the same limit.
Does the after-tax figure show my actual payout?
No. It subtracts one assumed tax rate from total modeled interest at the end. It does not calculate annual tax payments, account-specific tax treatment, deductions, or tax effects on later compounding.
Is this CD calculator free to use?
Yes. This calculator runs without an account or payment. Other Pineify products have separate access and plan requirements.
