Build Calendar Spread

One request loads at most 250 contracts of the selected type; later expirations and strikes can be missing. Only standard 100-share contracts are retained. Prices use the reported daily bar close, not executable quotes. DTE is an approximate UTC calendar-day label, not an exchange settlement clock. Missing IV or prices suppress the P&L curve; missing statistics remain N/A. No live-data guarantee.

Compare two expirations without treating snapshots as fills

A long calendar pairs a short earlier option with a long later option at the same strike and of the same type. Load a ticker, choose two returned expirations in order, and select a common strike. The request loads at most 250 contracts of one type. Missing later expirations or strikes can be a sampling limit, not proof that no contract exists.

Inspect prices and missing fields

The entry difference is the back daily-bar close minus the front daily-bar close. Those observations are not executable bid/ask prices and may have different update times. Standard 100-share contracts are required. Missing prices or positive back-month IV block the curve; missing Greeks remain unavailable.

Understand the scenario calculation

At front expiration, the short leg is assigned its intrinsic value. The remaining long option is valued with European Black-Scholes using its reported IV unchanged, a fixed 5% annual interest rate, zero dividends and the calendar-day gap between expirations divided by 365. P&L is 100 times the back theoretical value minus the front intrinsic value minus the entry debit. This is one spread; there is no quantity control.

Separate a displayed difference from an investment conclusion

The IV difference is back minus front, expressed in percentage points. Theta and vega differences are per-share snapshot sensitivities. Their signs can change. An apparent IV gap can reflect scheduled events, stale observations or differing uncertainty at the two maturities. It does not alone show which option is cheap or whether the spread will earn money.

Read the chart as a limited sensitivity analysis

The grid extends 15% beyond the lower and higher of spot and strike. Its highest and lowest P&L values are sampled extrema, not global maxima or a guaranteed loss limit. No probability of profit, exact breakeven solver, volatility-shift control, commission, dividend, early-exercise, assignment or funding model is included. American-style settlement can leave a position in the underlying even when the expiration diagram looks contained.

Calendar Spread Analyzer FAQ

Common questions about options calendar spreads and how to use this analyzer.

    • What position does this analyzer model?

One long calendar spread sells the earlier option and buys the later option at the same strike and type. The tool retains standard 100-share contracts. It compares returned snapshots, not historical executions or adjusted deliverables.

    • Does it load every expiration and strike?

No. The request returns at most 250 contracts of the selected type and does not follow pagination. A missing expiration or strike may be outside that sample. Fewer than two returned expirations cannot form a calendar spread.

    • What prices and volatility are used?

Entry prices use reported daily-bar closes, which can be stale or asynchronous. The scenario holds the reported back-month implied volatility constant. Missing prices, positive IV or spot data prevent a curve; missing statistics display N/A rather than zero.

    • Does an IV or theta difference identify a profitable trade?

No. The difference describes these snapshots. Time decay and volatility sensitivity depend on moneyness, remaining time and how each expiration reprices. An IV difference can reflect event risk and does not establish mispricing or future profit.

    • Are the plotted highest and lowest values risk limits?

No. They are sampled scenarios inside a limited price range at front expiration. The back option is valued with a European Black-Scholes model, a fixed 5% annual rate and no dividends. Assignment, early exercise, closing costs, financing and subsequent price moves are excluded; realized losses can differ.

    • Can this tool execute or automate a calendar spread?

No. It provides a browser comparison and theoretical curve. Linked Pineify products provide separate research workflows; this tool does not route orders, run a historical multi-leg options backtest or promise an optimal entry.
