Backtest Result Analyzer

Enter your backtest stats to get win rate, profit factor, historical average P&L, and ROI. Summary statistics do not establish strategy robustness.

Enter complete, finite totals with whole trade counts. Winners, losers and zero-result trades must agree with positive profit/loss totals; optional capital must be positive.

How to Use the Backtest Result Analyzer

Enter your backtest summary (total trades, wins, gross profit and loss) into the calculator. You get win rate, profit factor, expectancy per trade, average win/loss, and optional ROI—all instantly.

  1. Enter Total Trades: The number of closed trades in your backtest.
  2. Enter Winning Trades: How many of those trades were profitable.
  3. Enter Gross Profit and Loss: Total profit from winners and total loss from losers (enter loss as a positive number).
  4. Optional: Initial Capital: Add starting capital to see ROI %.
  5. Review Metrics: Use profit factor, expectancy, and break-even win rate to describe this sample. Check costs, drawdown and out-of-sample results separately.

What is Backtest Result Analysis?

Backtest result analysis turns raw trade counts and P&L into comparable metrics. Win rate alone can be misleading; profit factor and average P&L summarize the entered sample. They do not show trade order, drawdown, leverage or unobserved risks.

  • Win Rate: Percentage of trades that were profitable.
  • Profit Factor: Gross profit ÷ gross loss. Values above 1.0 mean entered profit exceeds entered loss. There is no universal threshold proving a strategy reliable.
  • Expectancy: Average profit or loss per trade (net P&L ÷ total trades).
  • Break-even Win Rate: The minimum win rate needed to break even given your average win and average loss sizes.

Why This Matters for Traders

Strategy backtests can look good on paper but fail in live trading. These summaries cannot detect overfitting. Compare the same dates, instruments, position sizing and cost assumptions, then inspect trade-level results and out-of-sample tests.

  • Strategy Comparison: Compare different backtests using the same metrics (e.g. profit factor, expectancy).
  • Risk Awareness: A high win rate with low profit factor can still lose money; this tool makes that clear.
  • Expectancy: Describes average P&L in the supplied sample, not the amount you should expect on your next trade.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this tool run a historical backtest?

No. It summarizes closed-trade counts and P&L you enter. It does not fetch prices, execute a strategy, or detect overfitting.

How should I enter breakeven trades and costs?

Count zero-result trades separately; they remain in total trades and the win-rate and expectancy denominators. Use USD amounts on a consistent cost basis. Costs omitted from your inputs are not deducted automatically.

Why can profit factor or ROI be unavailable?

Profit factor has no finite value when gross loss is zero. ROI requires positive initial capital. Neither metric measures intratrade drawdown or predicts future returns.

What does the break-even win rate mean?

It is average loss divided by average win plus average loss, among nonzero trades. It assumes those average outcomes persist and is not a forecast. Zero-result trades are excluded from this particular comparison.
