Important Note

2024 historical scenario, not current-year filing software. Baseline tax without this gain: $8,341. Combined modeled tax: $14,941. The headline subtracts baseline tax, so unrelated income tax is not charged against trading profit. No NIIT, AMT, state/local tax, credits, payments or loss benefits are included.

Read the Result as an Incremental Tax Scenario

The calculator first computes regular income tax on other ordinary income after your entered deduction. It then adds the nonnegative gain under the selected assumption and recomputes tax. The difference is the incremental tax displayed; after-tax profit subtracts only that difference.

For the 60/40 scenario, 40% enters ordinary income and 60% enters long-term capital gain. The long-term amount is stacked above taxable ordinary income using the 2024 filing-status thresholds at 0%, 15% and 20%. A deduction exceeding ordinary income reduces the remaining long-term amount. The model compares this preferential-rate result with ordinary tax on all taxable income and uses the lower regular tax.

Tax Treatment Depends on the Contract

Section 1256 includes specified regulated futures and qualifying foreign-currency contracts; it does not cover every product sold as forex. Section 988 can produce ordinary gain or loss treatment. Contract facts, exceptions and valid elections matter. An election out of ordinary treatment does not by itself make every spot contract eligible for Section 1256.

For qualifying Section 1256 contracts, year-end mark-to-market amounts generally matter even when a position is still open. Use tax-adjusted figures, not just cash withdrawals or the sum of closed winning trades. Verify the contract classification and any election requirements before applying a scenario.

How to Enter a Scenario

  1. Enter gains and losses for one assumed treatment. This model only calculates when gains are at least losses.
  2. Enter other ordinary income before the deduction. Other capital gains, qualified dividends and capital-loss netting are outside this simplified model.
  3. Select Single, Married Filing Jointly or Head of Household. The displayed deduction is a separate manual input, not an automatically determined entitlement.
  4. Compare baseline tax, combined tax and the incremental difference. Zero net trading gain produces zero incremental tax, even when other income is taxable.

What the Calculator Does Not Determine

It does not model net-loss benefits, loss carryovers or carrybacks, straddles, trader status, tax elections, credits, NIIT, AMT, state/local tax, estimated payments or refund balances. Net-loss inputs suppress the result instead of implying that the loss has no tax effect. Bracket arithmetic is an estimate and is not the IRS filing tax-table rounding procedure.

Estimated-payment requirements depend on withholding, credits and safe-harbor rules as well as the amount owed. This calculator does not determine those payments or recommend closing trades, choosing an election or claiming an expense.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which tax year does this calculator use?

2024 US federal ordinary-income and long-term capital-gain thresholds. It is a historical scenario, not a current-year filing calculation.

Can I choose Section 1256 for any forex trade?

No. The control only selects a calculation assumption. Eligibility depends on the contract and applicable rules or elections; selecting a radio button does not change tax treatment.

Why does the headline differ from combined tax?

The headline is combined modeled tax minus baseline tax on other income. It estimates the added regular federal tax associated with the entered gain, rather than subtracting unrelated income tax from trading profit.

Are losses and all taxes included?

No. Net-loss cases suppress the estimate because deductions and carryover rules need separate analysis. NIIT, AMT, state/local taxes, credits and payments are also excluded.
