Custom Screening in Investment Analysis
A useful screen produces a shortlist whose inclusion rules you can explain and reproduce. Define the data and calculation first, inspect excluded or missing records, then investigate the companies that remain.
An Illustrative Research Process
The 4-Stage Investment Screening Funnel
These four stages organize research; they do not establish a portfolio or an expected return. The numeric thresholds below are explicit examples, not generally suitable investment rules.
Stage 1: Universe & Liquidity
For this example, use US-listed common stocks with market cap above $1 billion. Measure average daily dollar volume over 20 completed sessions as the mean of daily close times volume. A dollar-volume threshold does not guarantee a narrow spread or a fill.
Illustrative Filters:
Stage 2: Financial Measures
Use statements in one currency and comparable periods. Here, FCF means operating cash flow less positive capex outflows, and FCF yield means that annual FCF divided by current equity market cap. Do not substitute FCF margin, which divides by revenue.

Stage 3: Technical Context
As an optional research condition, compare the completed daily close with SMA200 of completed daily closes. Record the session and adjustment settings. Pineify can display supported technical fields, but a trend condition neither identifies institutional buyers nor proves an entry advantage.

Stage 4: Business Verification
Read the annual report, subsequent quarterly reports and material updates. Reconcile unusual cash flows, debt commitments and business risks. Use AI to organize evidence, then check its sources and decide what would invalidate the research thesis.

Different Evidence, Different Questions
Separate Business Analysis from Price Context
Financial filters identify companies worth investigating; they do not establish a durable advantage or fair value. Read the financial statements together and compare companies with similar business models and accounting conventions.
Technical context is optional. A price above an average describes recent price behavior, not who is buying or whether a stock is undervalued. Adding the condition changes the selected universe and needs its own rationale.
Pineify Market Screener can monitor supported listings after the financial review. Keep the financial calculation and its source dates alongside the watchlist; the technical table does not certify the quality of the underlying business.
Pineify Analysis Ecosystem
Pineify AI Finance Agent
Retrieve financial statements and dividend records for analysis. Ask for dates, currencies and sources; verify the response against company disclosures.
Pineify Market Screener
Up to 15 collections, 100 symbols and 20 indicator columns per collection. The active visible collection polls every 60 seconds. Full access requires an account and Expert or higher; polling is not a tick-by-tick feed.
Risk Management
Three Common Pitfalls in Investment Screening
1. The Value Trap
A low P/E may reflect falling earnings expectations, one-off gains or financial risk. Check the earnings period, recurring cash generation and debt obligations; no single ratio rules out deterioration.
2. Over-Filtering
Record how many candidates each condition removes. An empty list can reflect restrictive thresholds, missing data or an unsuitable universe. Change one assumption at a time and keep the original result instead of forcing a desired stock to pass.
3. Testing with Information from the Future
A historical test must use information available on each test date, including actual filing dates and securities that later delisted. Choosing filters after seeing their returns can favor noise. Reserve later data for evaluation and account for turnover and trading costs.
Work Through One Candidate
Assume an invented company has market cap of $2 billion, annual operating cash flow of $180 million and capex outflows of $60 million. This worksheet gives FCF of $120 million and FCF yield of 6%. If revenue is $1.5 billion, FCF margin is 8%. The two percentages answer different questions.
Assume each of the last 20 completed sessions traded 300,000 shares at a $30 closing price: the example's average daily dollar volume is $9 million. The latest completed close of $30 exceeds a $28 SMA200 by about 7.14%. The candidate passes these illustrative conditions; that result says nothing about tomorrow's return. If capex is missing, mark FCF unknown instead of treating capex as zero.
For this nonfinancial-company example, compare the stated FCF calculation with the issuer's reconciliation. It is not standardized, and other cash commitments remain. Banks, insurers and property businesses may need different sector measures. Preserve the market-cap observation date and financial reporting period rather than presenting them as one simultaneous snapshot.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is custom screening in investment analysis?
It is a repeatable way to select research candidates using stated conditions. A complete specification includes the universe, field definitions, reporting periods, thresholds, missing-data treatment and observation date. Passing a screen is not a recommendation to buy.
When is a custom screen useful?
Use one when a predefined screen does not express your research question. Extra customization is not inherently better: more conditions can reduce coverage, increase maintenance and make a historical result easier to overfit.
Can a ratio screen eliminate value traps?
No. A low multiple or high ROE can have several causes. Read the filings, check cash generation and debt maturities, and examine the denominator. Negative or very small equity can make ROE and debt/equity misleading.
Which parts can Pineify help with?
AI Finance Agent can retrieve financial data for further analysis; its output needs source checks. Market Screener displays supported technical fields in collections, with eight timeframe choices and full access at Expert or higher. It does not automatically execute every fundamental or qualitative rule in this workflow.
What are the four stages used here?
Define the universe, calculate comparable financial measures, inspect technical context and verify the business evidence. This is an illustrative research workflow, not a universal institutional standard or a proven return strategy.
Build Your Custom Screening Workflow
Inspect supported technical fields after defining your research rules. Review Expert plan access and verify the data before relying on a result.
