Start with Chart Context, Not an Indicator Signal
Reading a stock chart for day trading starts with the symbol, session, timezone, and timeframe. A five-minute regular-session chart answers a different question from a one-minute chart that includes pre-market data. Confirm those settings first, then mark the session high and low known at that moment, prior close, a completed opening range, and any price area that produced repeated reactions.

- Keep the timezone and session consistent during review
- Use a higher intraday timeframe to avoid reading one noisy bar in isolation
Read Trend and Structure Before Choosing an Entry
Describe what price has already done. Higher swing highs and higher swing lows describe an intraday uptrend. Lower highs and lower lows describe a downtrend. Overlapping swings suggest a range. A moving average or VWAP can add context, but it should not replace the visible sequence of swings and the level that would invalidate the interpretation.
Use Volume as Context, Not Proof
Volume measures traded units, such as shares or contracts, during the reported interval; it does not count unique participants or identify their intent. Compare a completed bar with a defined reference and the same time of day where appropriate. A partial bar has had less time to accumulate volume. High or low volume alone does not establish that a breakout will continue or reverse. Check spread and available liquidity separately.
Turn the Chart Read into a Testable Plan
A chart observation becomes testable only when the entry, exit, invalidation, session, and sizing rules are explicit. Freeze the information available at the decision time
Suppose an example opening range is defined from 09:30 through 09:45 in the exchange timezone. Its final high is not known at 09:35. A screenshot from 09:35 cannot justify a trade using the eventual 09:45 high. Likewise, a five-minute candle that starts at 10:00 is still forming at 10:03. Keep the screenshot timestamp, bar state, and entry rule together so later candles do not leak into the review.
