Backtest Analysis for Crypto Trading Strategies
A BTC backtest needs an exchange, a specific instrument and an execution model. Record those choices before interpreting profit or drawdown. Pineify can help draft the Pine Script; TradingView runs the strategy simulation. Neither step proves that the strategy can trade profitably.
Start with the Market You Intend to Test
BTC/USD spot, BTC/USDT spot and a BTC perpetual contract are different datasets and instruments. Record the exchange-qualified ticker, quote currency, timeframe, dates and missing bars. For derivatives, identify contract sizing, funding, margin and liquidation rules separately. A spot chart with short entries enabled does not establish that spot borrowing was available. Define the experiment before selecting parameters, and reserve later dates for evaluation.
How It Works
- 1
Write an exact specification: entry signal at a confirmed close, earliest permitted fill, exit priority, position size, maximum simultaneous positions and test dates. State whether sizing means percent of equity invested or percent of equity at risk.
- 2
Ask Pineify Coding Agent to draft that specification. Request its syntax check, fix reported errors, then compile in TradingView. Inspect the generated conditions and compare several signals with hand-worked examples; compilation cannot verify your trading rules.
- 3
Use standard candles on the intended exchange ticker. Set commission and slippage explicitly. Historical OHLC data does not automatically supply your spread, market impact, queue position or account-specific fees. Audit funding and borrowing separately where applicable.
- 4
Reconcile entries and exits before judging aggregate metrics. Save the script version, inputs, date range and properties with the trade export. In the current TradingView report, the Trades download provides CSV; the whole-report export provides XLSX.
- 5
Compare the frozen version on the reserved dates and repeat with less favorable costs. Examine losses by market regime, concentration in a few trades and time without positions. A useful research result can be a rejected strategy. Forward observation is a separate test.
Three Workflows to Evaluate
| Feature | Pineify Coding Agent + TradingView | Freqtrade | Cryptohopper |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strategy workflow | Draft Pine Script, review it, then simulate in TradingView | Python strategy with a configurable backtesting command | Hosted Strategy Designer and backtesting tools |
| Data and assumptions to check | Chart instrument, available history, order model and costs | Downloaded exchange data, fee configuration and documented candle-fill assumptions | Supported exchange and pair, available history, configuration and subscription access |
| Execution limitation | Pine strategy orders are simulated; deployment needs a separate execution workflow | Backtesting assumes no slippage for eligible fills; evaluate dry-run behavior separately | A historical test and a connected live bot are separate operating modes |
| Basis for choosing | Useful when the research and review workflow belongs in Pine | Useful when you need a Python strategy and local configuration | Useful when you prefer its hosted strategy and bot workflow |
Example Research Tasks
BTC Crossover: Check Position Risk
Example question
“Specify a long-only daily 50/200 SMA crossover with 1% of equity invested and a 2% price stop.”
Illustrative response
At a hypothetical $10,000 equity, a $100 position loses about $2 at that stop before costs and gaps: 0.02% of equity, not 1%. A sizing review must settle this distinction before interpreting the report. No return is claimed for this example.
ETH RSI: Check Signal Timing
Example question
“Specify a long entry when RSI(14) crosses below 30 on a closed 4-hour candle and an exit when it crosses above 60.”
Illustrative response
Mark several candidate timestamps by hand. Distinguish a crossing from simply remaining below a level. Check the order creation time and fill separately, and define the stop and sizing before running. There is no measured win rate attached to this research task.
Spot Versus Perpetual: Check Costs
Example question
“List what must change when moving a BTC spot research specification to a perpetual contract.”
Illustrative response
Review contract quantity, collateral, funding timestamps, leverage and liquidation assumptions. Reconcile them with the intended venue. Do not treat an unchanged spot backtest as a perpetual performance estimate.
Sample Questions to Try
- ›Draft a long-only BTC daily 50/200 SMA strategy specification and list unresolved fill and sizing assumptions before coding.
- ›Review this ETH RSI strategy for crossing versus level conditions, closed-bar signals and exit priority.
- ›Explain which costs this crypto Pine strategy models and which funding or borrowing costs remain unmodeled.
- ›Help design separate development and evaluation dates for this crypto strategy without choosing parameters from the evaluation results.
