AI Trading Agents for Retail Traders: Compare Tasks and Total Cost
Choose an agent by its supported task, evidence and permissions. Research, code generation, scanning and order execution are different services. This comparison framework does not rank providers by an unperformed trading test or promise that a subscription will pay for itself.
Calculate cost before comparing features
For a hypothetical $2,000 account, a $50 monthly subscription costs $600 a year, or 30% of starting capital before trading fees or returns. That is arithmetic, not a recommended spending limit. Include exchange data, broker commissions, financing, spreads, alert limits and cancellation terms. A one-time plan and a recurring service are comparable only when their included work and future costs are clear.
How It Works
- 1
Write a concrete acceptance task: retrieve a dated filing, explain a rule, generate inspectable code, scan a supported universe or route an order. Evaluate the output for that task.
- 2
Check current official product documentation. Trade Ideas describes scanning, Holly and natural-language tools; it should not be dismissed as having no AI chat. Execution-bot services have separate exchange, region and permission requirements.
- 3
Inspect source access, history coverage, data delay and exportability. Missing documentation is unknown rather than proof a competing product lacks a feature.
- 4
Use a trial or permitted simulation to measure task accuracy and operational behavior. Record failures and time spent; a vendor demo is not an independent benchmark.
- 5
Before any execution integration, verify the actual account permissions, order limits, cancellation behavior and emergency controls. Code generation does not require granting a trading service access to funds.
Keep workflow stages separate
| Feature | Research | Strategy code and testing | Order execution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Output | Sourced information and interpretation | Inspectable source and a separately run test | Orders and actual fill records |
| Evidence | Provider, period and missing-data checks | Rule review, syntax check and simulation assumptions | Broker permissions, order status and reconciliation |
| Limit | An answer is not a trade instruction | A backtest does not guarantee live results | Integration and execution risk remain |
Example Research Tasks
Small-account cost comparison
Example question
“Compare two offers with different billing periods.”
Illustrative response
Annualize recurring fees and include required extras. Use the current checkout; this page does not publish unverified competitor or Pineify prices.
Research versus automation
Example question
“I need a filing summary, not a bot placing orders.”
Illustrative response
Choose a research workflow and inspect citations. Brokerage connectivity is unnecessary for that task.
Code acceptance
Example question
“Does this generated strategy match my written rules?”
Illustrative response
Check conditions, sizing and exits before a separate test. A successful compile alone is insufficient.
