What is Volume Profile Analysis?

Volume Profile is a powerful technical analysis tool that displays trading activity over a specified time period at specific price levels. Unlike traditional volume indicators that show volume over time (vertical bars at the bottom of a chart), Volume Profile shows volume at price (horizontal bars on the side of the chart). This perspective helps traders identify significant price levels where the most trading activity occurred.

Our free Volume Profile Analyzer allows you to upload your historical price and volume data to calculate the volume distribution across price levels. The tool identifies the Point of Control (POC), which is the price level with the highest traded volume, and the Value Area, which encompasses approximately 70% of the total volume traded. These levels often act as significant support and resistance zones.

How to Use This Volume Profile Analyzer

  1. 1

    Export Your Data

Export historical price data with volume from your trading platform (TradingView, MetaTrader, broker platform) in CSV format. The file must include date, high, low, close, and volume columns.

  2. 2

    Upload Your CSV File

Click the upload area or drag and drop your CSV file. The analyzer will parse the data and calculate the volume distribution automatically.

  3. 3

    Adjust Settings

Customize the number of price levels (bins) and the Value Area percentage. More levels provide finer granularity, while fewer levels show broader zones.

  4. 4

    Analyze Key Levels

Review the POC (highest volume price), VAH (Value Area High), and VAL (Value Area Low). These levels often act as strong support and resistance in future trading.

  5. 5

    Apply to Your Trading

Use the identified levels to plan entries near the POC, set targets at VA boundaries, or anticipate breakouts when price moves outside the Value Area.

Key Volume Profile Concepts

ConceptDescriptionTrading Application
Point of Control (POC)Price level with highest volumeFair value, mean reversion target
Value Area High (VAH)Upper boundary of 70% volumeResistance level, breakout target
Value Area Low (VAL)Lower boundary of 70% volumeSupport level, breakdown target
High Volume Nodes (HVN)Price levels with significant volumeStrong S/R, price tends to consolidate
Low Volume Nodes (LVN)Price levels with minimal volumePrice moves quickly through, weak S/R

Why Use Volume Profile Analysis?

Identify Fair Value

The POC represents where the market found balance. Price often returns to this level, making it ideal for mean reversion strategies.

Find Key S/R Levels

High volume nodes act as strong support and resistance. Low volume nodes indicate areas where price moves quickly.

Spot Breakout Potential

When price moves outside the Value Area, it often signals the start of a new trend or significant move.

Understand Market Structure

Volume Profile reveals where institutional traders have accumulated or distributed positions, showing true market interest.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Volume Profile?

Volume Profile is a charting indicator that displays trading activity over a specified time period at specific price levels. Unlike traditional volume bars that show volume over time, Volume Profile shows volume at price, helping traders identify significant price levels where the most trading occurred.

What is the Point of Control (POC)?

The Point of Control (POC) is the price level with the highest traded volume in the Volume Profile. It represents the "fair value" price where the most trading activity occurred and often acts as a strong support or resistance level.

What is the Value Area?

The Value Area is the price range where approximately 70% of the total volume was traded. It consists of the Value Area High (VAH) and Value Area Low (VAL). Prices tend to stay within the Value Area during consolidation and break out during trending moves.

How do I use this Volume Profile Analyzer?

Upload a CSV file containing your price and volume data. The file should have columns for date, high, low, close, and volume. The analyzer will calculate the volume distribution across price levels, identify the POC, and determine the Value Area boundaries.

What file format is required?

The analyzer accepts CSV files with columns for date, high, low, close, and volume. You can export this data from most trading platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader, or your broker. Download our sample file to see the exact format.

How is the volume distributed across price levels?

The analyzer divides the price range into bins (configurable number of rows). For each candle, the volume is distributed proportionally across the price bins that the candle spans (from low to high). This creates a histogram showing volume concentration at each price level.
